College Celebrates Kick-off of "The Big Read"

Northeast Lakeview College and Randolph-Brooks FCU partnered to kick-off "The Big Read for an Enlightened Community" on March 3rd. The event featured a private reception with author Charles Shields and included a meet-and-greet with the author followed by his 40 minute presentation. Attending the event were key community partners, including ACCD Trustee Gary Beitzel, other District personnel, SCUCISD and JISD administration, members of the Randolph Metrocom Chamber, mayors of the various Metrocom cities and other community constituents. On March 4 at the Live Oak Civic Center. Shields, author of The New York Times Bestseller Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee, discussed why he chose to write a biography of Lee, the surprises he encountered along the way, and the parallels between To Kill A Mockingbird and Harper Lee’s life. State Representative Joe Farias welcomed the author and discussed the importance of reading for a successful education and brighter future. Over 250 NLC students, faculty and members of the Metrocom community turned out to hear the bestselling author. Also, as part of The Big Read for an Enlightened Community, Northeast Lakeview College hosted a “Reader’s Theater” at Judson High School on March 11. Reader's theater is a style of theater in which the actors do not memorize their lines; they sit or stand together on stage, hold their scripts, and recite their lines. Through facial expressions and voice fluctuations the audience understands what is taking place. Members of this Reader’s Theater included local attorneys, including Judge Philip A. Kazen Jr., Judge 227th District Court. The public event drew area students, community members, and NLC representatives.

RBFCU Donates to NLC Scholarship Fund

Northeast Lakeview College received a check for $5,000 from Randolph-Brooks FCU for the NLC Scholarship Fund. This donation is in addition to the $50,000 Founder’s Scholarship the credit union established in 2007. The RBFCU scholarship is one of three Founder’s Scholarships and is the largest one to date.

NLC Awarded Historic Preservation Grant

Northeast Lakeview College has been awarded a $3,000 matching funds grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, an organization established in 1949 which provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to save America’s diverse historic places and revitalize our communities. The funds will be used to hire a consultant to write 20 foundation grant proposals between April and November 2008 for the Lower Valley School District #33 Restoration Project.

NLC President, Judson Superintendent Meet

Dr. Eric Reno, NLC President, met with Dr. Willis Mackey, Judson ISD Superintendent, to discuss the progress of the Early College High School (ECHS) that will sit on the new Northeast Lakeview College campus. Reno and Mackey also discussed key design features of the Judson ISD building. The ECHS is expected to enroll its first class in Fall 2009.
