NLC Awarded Training Grant from Alamo WorkSource

Northeast Lakeview College and Alamo WorkSource have partnered to offer the Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) program, a nationally-recognized program designed to reduce the skills gap and provide tomorrow’s workforce with foundational job skills. Upon completion of the program, the program provides participants with a portable certificate which verifies that an individual possesses the basic workplace skills required for 21st century jobs. Funding for the program comes from a $30,000 grant from Alamo WorkSource and is the first Career Readiness Certificate program in the greater San Antonio area. The pilot program is scheduled to begin in June 2008. An official grant announcement and presentation was held March 31st at Northeast Lakeview College. Dr. Federico Zaragoza, vice chancellor for economic & workforce development and officials from Alamo WorkSource attended the event.
Dr. Cindy Griffith, NLC dean of workforce development & community education, was inspirational in bringing this partnership to Northeast Lakeview College and the Alamo Community Colleges.

NLC Hosts Reader's Theater for Clemens Freshmen/Teams with Local Businesses

As part of The Big Read for an Enlightened Community, Northeast Lakeview College recently hosted a “Reader’s Theater” for freshman at Samuel Clemens High School. Reader's theater is a style of theater in which the actors do not memorize their lines; they sit or stand together on stage, hold their scripts, and recite their lines. More than 350 freshman Clemens HS English students attended the event and incorporated other Big Read activities into their coursework, as To Kill A Mockingbird is required reading for them. Northeast Lakeview College also continues to partner with several area organizations to support The Big Read for an Enlightened Community. First Baptist Church of Universal City offered a community film screening of To Kill A Mockingbird on April 1st. Additionally, Northeast Methodist Hospital, the Army Retirement Center and Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union hosted Reader’s Theaters and panel discussions for their employees as well as the community. Since its kick-off, The Big Read for an Enlightened Community has been supported by over 20 area organizations and has brought more than 1,200 people together to read.

NLC's Lewis Awarded Executive Fellowship

Dr. Beth Lewis, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Northeast Lakeview College, was recently awarded an Executive Fellowship by the United States Department of Agriculture’s E. (Kika) De la Garza’s Hispanic Serving Institution Fellowship Program. This program establishes strategic alliances with USDA officials to create programs in Hispanic Serving Institutions to enhance professional and organizational development efforts that support research and teaching programs. Lewis will spend a week in Washington, D.C. this summer where she and the other national program fellows will meet with officials from the USDA and various legislators. Lewis’ primary focus in the Executive Fellowship will be on developing a viticulture and enology program at Northeast Lakeview College while working with the vintners in the Texas Hill Country.

NLC, RMCC Partner to Host Lunch & Learn

The March 20th Randolph Metrocom Chamber of Commerce (RMCC) monthly “Lunch & Learn” was hosted by Northeast Lakeview College and focused on The Big Read. Dr. Jeannine Foster, NLC adjunct English instructor held a book discussion of To Kill A Mockingbird. The “Lunch & Learn” is held monthly by the RMCC and local businesses in the area provide educational workshops on various topics. “Lunch & Learn” is open to chamber members and the community. The Randolph Metrocom Chamber is a primary partner to Northeast Lakeview College and its Big Read for an Enlightened Community project.
