JECA Screens Level Two Applicants

The Judson Early College Academy (JECA) committee screened its level two applicants and 175 applicants were reviewed. There is one more step in the screening process before the 125 inaugural class of students are selected. JECA is scheduled to open for classes on the Northeast Lakeview College campus in Fall 2009 and its graduates will earn both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree.

NLC Assists at Academic Decathlon

Northeast Lakeview College had fifty-seven faculty, staff, and students assist at the Texas Academic Decathlon on February 27 -28th at San Antonio College. NLC’s fifty-seven volunteers was the second largest group to participate from the Alamo Colleges. The Texas Academic Decathlon is a State Finals competition for Medium and Small Schools.

NLC Supports the Fisher House

Over twenty volunteers from Northeast Lakeview College supported The Fisher House at Fort Sam Houston (BAMC) on Saturday, February 28th. The event was part of a service learning activity of the Social Psychology class at NLC and included face-painting, arts and crafts, and a luau, complete with Tropical food and Hawaiian dancers. Fisher House is a residence for family members of injured soldiers, located close to the hospital and treatment centers so that they can be near their family members while they are recovering.

Alamo Colleges Psychology Forum Holds Spring Symposium

The Alamo Colleges Psychology Forum held its Spring Symposium on Tuesday, March 3rd. The theme was “Technology and Innovation in the Classroom.” Organized and coordinated by Dr. Stephanie Greiner, Interim Chair of Social & Behavioral Sciences at NLC, The Alamo Colleges Psychology Forum is funded by a grant from the Association for Psychological Science aimed at public awareness and the teaching of psychology, and has also received funds from the Alamo Colleges Achieving the Dream initiative. The symposium provided an opportunity for psychology faculty to discuss issues facing Alamo Colleges psychology students, share techniques in the teaching of psychology at the community college level, and learn innovative teaching methods. The symposium is the second of a two-part workshop; the first conference was held in October 2008 and included a keynote address by Dr. Laura King.

NLC Holds Blood Drive Three Times in One Month

Northeast Lakeview College hosted a Blood Drive on February 20th as result of a last-minute cancellation by another organization. This visit was the third time the Blood and Tissue Center visited the College in February. According to the Center, NLC reached an all-time one-day record, with forty-seven donors on February 10th. Based on facility size and location, NLC always meets or exceeds its daily goal of blood donations.
