Toyota

Toyota Motor Manufacturing of North America has invested $850 million in San Antonio on a 2.2 million square foot manufacturing facility with the capacity for the production of 200,000 Tundra trucks a year. Vehicle production is scheduled to start in late 2006. Toyota will employ 2,000 workers in San Antonio.

The Alamo Community College District has developed an outstanding working relationship with Toyota. St. Philip’s College Southwest Campus has served as an employee assessment center for Toyota. At Palo Alto College, Toyota has equipped a laboratory for the training of skilled technicians. San Antonio College and Northwest Vista College stand ready to assist Toyota to ensure their success in San Antonio. In addition to Toyota, San Antonio has benefited by an influx of Toyota suppliers that will employ an additional 2,000 workers.

Washington Mutual

Washington Mutual recently announced the opening of a regional operations center that will employ 4,200 people.

National Security Agency Regional Cryptology Center

A National Security Agency Cryptology Center will create 2,000 new jobs.

Healthcare Industry  

The healthcare industry is a major employer in San Antonio with 28 general hospitals, two Department of Defense hospitals, one Veteran’s Administration hospital, two Texas hospitals and the Texas Center for Infectious Diseases.

The 900-acre South Texas Medical Center includes the prestigious University of Texas Health Science Center with its School of Medicine and School of Dentistry, 12 major healthcare institutions, two free-standing research centers and 30 other facilities that provide health education, treatment and research.

Four Military Bases
  • Fort Sam Houston (Army)
    A dynamic and growing installation, taking on new missions such as the home of the Army Medical Command headquarters, in addition to command headquarters such as Fifth U.S. Army, U.S. Army South, Fifth Recruiting Brigade, 12th ROTC Brigade, U.S. Navy Regional Recruiting, the San Antonio Military Entrance and Processing Station, and the U.S. Naval School of Health Sciences, Bethesda Detachment.

    Also located at Fort Sam Houston are Brooke Army Medical Center, the Great Plains Regional Medical Command, Headquarters Dental Command, Headquarters Veterinary Command, the Institute for Surgical Research (trauma/burn center), the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute, and the Army Medical Department NCO Academy.

  • Lackland Air Force Base
    Lackland AFB is located on the southwestern fringe of San Antonio and encompasses approximately 7,000 acres. It is home to the 37th Training Wing as the host installation command, and is flanked by the largest Associate, the 59th Medical Wing (i.e. Wilford Hall Medical Center).

  • Randolph Air Force Base
    Randolph Air Force Base is the home of the 12th Flying Training Wing. The 12th FTW is the only unit in the Air Force conducting both pilot instructor training and combat systems officer training. Historic and beautiful, Randolph has earned its nickname, "Showplace of the Air Force".

  • Brooks City Base
    Brooks City Base is a thriving technology and business center that is a result of a unique partnership between the United States Air Force and the City of San Antonio. The partnership allows for civilian tenants in the Bioscience, Academic, Environmental, or Technical fields to benefit from collaboration with Air Force missions and personnel. This collaboration provides unmatched on-site scientific, technological and intellectual assets.

Local Attractions and Venues

From professional basketball (Spurs - 1999, 2003 and 2005 NBA Champions) to professional rodeo and the Valero Texas Open, San Antonio is home to many venues for relaxation and entertainment.

Theaters
  • Majestic Performing Arts Center - Venue for touring Broadway shows, concerts as well as the San Antonio Symphony
  • Empire Theater – Charlene McCombs Empire Theater is host to a variety of entertainment including musicals, comedians, and small theatrical performances
  • Carver Community Cultural Center – Plays host to a blend of choral groups, dance company performances and theatrical performances
  • Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center – Is a non-profit organization supporting the development and presentation of Chicano/Latino/Native American arts – dance, literature, theater and music
  • Several additional private and civic playhouses and organizations host performances ranging from drama to children’s theater: Arts San Antonio!, San Pedro Playhouse, Josephine Theater, and Jump Start Performance Company

Museums
  • San Antonio Museum of Art – Includes collections of Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiques, Latin American and Asian art, as well as 18th, 19th, and 20th century painting and sculptures, as well as national traveling exhibitions.

    The Museum's pre-Columbian collection comprises a wide assortment of materials from Mesoamerica, Central America, and the Andean region. The Museum's Spanish colonial collection, primarily religious art, encompasses over 100 paintings and objects from Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, and the Philippines. The Museum houses one of the world's most important repositories of Latin American Folk Art, grown from a nucleus belonging to the late Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller. The collection now numbers more than 10,000 objects representing a broad range of functions, types, and materials dating from the 18th century to the present.

    The Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Art Wing, a 15,000 square foot addition opened in 2005, makes the San Antonio Museum of Art the largest center for Asian art in the southwestern United States. It houses an Asian art collection with more than 1,400 works from China, India, Japan, Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka and Tibet, spanning nearly 6,000 years of history.

  • Witte Memorial Museum – Houses history and science exhibits, American Indian artifacts, and major traveling exhibits as well as family and educational events
  • McNay Art Museum – Focuses primarily on 19th and 20th century European and American art
  • San Antonio Children’s Museum – More than 80 interactive exhibits target children aged 2 – 10

Cultural Facilities
  • Libraries – The City’s Library system includes 18 branch libraries
  • San Antonio Symphony – the award-winning Symphony has a proud heritage dating back to 1939. Programs include classical symphonic music, choral masterpieces and semi-staged opera, as well as Pops performances
  • Houses of worship - with over 1,200 churches, synagogues and other places of worship, the San Antonio community thrives on a rich legacy of interfaith cooperation
  • National Autonomous University of Mexico - San Antonio (UNAM) - With a history of over 60 years of service to the San Antonio Community, UNAM-San Antonio promotes a better understanding between Mexico and the United States through the teaching of Spanish, English, and other topics important to both countries. The university also organizes seminars, symposia, panel discussions, exhibitions, book fairs, and other diverse academic activities involving the United States and Mexico.

Amusement Parks/Gardens
  • Sea World San Antonio – The largest marine life adventure park in the world, covers 250 acres with shows, exhibits, rides and a themed water park
  • Fiesta Texas – Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a theme and water park that reflects the heritage and culture of its Southwest roots occupying about 200 acres in northwest San Antonio
  • Paseo del Rio – San Antonio’s famed Riverwalk has more than two miles of cool walks with ancient cypress and oak trees shading restaurants, shops, cafes, clubs and entertainment
  • HemisFair Park – Scene of the 1968 World’s Fair, the Park is home to visitor attractions as well as educational institutions and some municipal operations. Attractions include a medley of unique shops and the Tower of the America’s, which offers a breathtaking view of the city from its 605-foot observation deck and accompanying revolving restaurant
  • La Villita – Spanish for “little town,” this is the city’s original settlement. It has been restored and now showcases a unique arts and crafts community as well as restaurants
  • San Antonio Botanical Garden – The 33 acres that make up this horticultural facility from a living museum of plant life
