Northeast Lakeview College Students Take Entrepreneur's Challenge

(San Antonio, TX - May 4, 2007) On May 1st, Northeast Lakeview College students in Barbara Mayo's, Fundamentals of Speech class participated in a project titled "The Entrepreneur's Challenge." Developed and coordinated by Mayo, Humanities Chairperson, the project required students to work in teams to first develop a company identity, create a product and present that product in a persuasive format to encourage those attending to invest in their idea.

Divided into four teams, students developed and marketed unique product ideas such as the "Kiddie Beeper" an electric child tracking device, beeping to signify your child has walked away and can locate the missing little one from up to 75 ft. away. Other products included an automatic shower towel warmer, a teleconference video cell phone, and a mobile advertising machine. "The class teaches more than presentation skills," says Mayo. "The fundamentals of the class include interviewing skills and group theory."

Mayo provided potential investors, who included NLC students, faculty, and staff with "Mayo Mad Money" to invest in the product thought to have the best potential. Collecting the most invested funds and this year's winner was the "A-Team," the creators of the video cell phone product. The Entrepreneur's Challenge provided students with practical experience dealing with group communication and applying persuasive presentation skills.
