Northeast Lakeview College Student of the Month - March 2008
Cheryl Blauvelt is an extraordinary student pursuing academic excellence in the hopes that an education will provide a better life for her family and herself. She manages to excel academically all while taking care of her family, working part-time, running her own business, and volunteering in her community.
Cheryl's dedication to her family is without measure. Her two sons, both under the age of 10, live with Autism and require continuous care. Her experiences and understanding of children with special needs has motivated her to assist others in similar situations. Her long term career goal is to become a Marriage and Family Therapist and work directly with the families of disabled children.
Additionally, Cheryl works part-time at the Alamo Community College District's Student Community and Program Development Office. Cheryl owns and operates a cosmetic company, founded over four years ago, that specializes in organic ingredients. And despite all this, Cheryl also volunteers in the community. She serves as a Special Education Classroom Assistant and volunteers at Girls, Inc. where she mentors teenage girls.
Ms. Blauvelt has endured numerous challenges throughout her life, but still manages to see the positive in any situation. Undoubtedly, her life experiences have only intensified her motivation to perform well in anything that she does. According to one of her instructors, "Cheryl is a motivated, interested, and dedicated student who never fails to surpass her instructor's expectations. Cheryl is an ideal student that any instructor would be fortunate to teach. She is truly deserving of the Student of the Month award and I cannot think of a more dedicated or well-rounded candidate."
