English 0300: Basic English I
Departmental Syllabus
PREREQUISITE: Appropriate placement score on Accuplacer
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Emphasizes effective sentences. For students who need to improve their basic skills in grammatical usage, functions of words and sentence structure. This course cannot be substituted for any part of the regular courses. A student in English 0300 must receive a grade of “C” or better before being permitted to take English 0301.
GOALS OF THE COURSE: The developmental English courses assists students in developing the ability to write effectively utilizing standard English, vary writing style and improve the ability to gather information. Developmental writing courses are intended for students who need additional preparation in writing and spelling prior to enrolling in college-level courses using these skills.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of English 0300,
Learning Outcome 1: Students will determine the audience for a text.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 1 by completing exercises on the purpose for writing, knowledge about the audience, and the role they should assume when writing.
Learning Outcome 2: Students will apply the writing process.
Performance Objective and Measurement : Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 2 by determining the appropriate prewriting strategy for an assignment, compose a draft of the assignment, and then revise and edit the draft.
Learning Outcome 3: Students will use standard American English.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 3 by employing correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, pronoun reference and agreement, and appropriate tense and voice on tests and in written assignments.
Learning Outcome 4: Students will compose clear, coherent paragraphs.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 4 by taking a position in topic sentences and producing paragraphs that support the position. Students will use Standard American English as defined in Outcome 3..
Learning Outcome 5: Students will compose a coherent piece of writing that communicates to a specific audience.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will write a final writing sample that achieves a 4 or a 5 when the paper is scored holistically.
ATTENDANCE
Regular and punctual class attendance is required. A student who is absent for any reason will be allowed to do make-up work at the discretion of the instructor. However, a student will be held responsible for all class work and materials. A student who has accumulated absences equivalent to two (2) weeks of instruction may be dropped after the census date. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W” (Withdrew). Since tardiness is a form of absenteeism, the instructor may establish a policy regarding tardiness.
DROPS AND WITHDRAWALS
The Communications Department requires that students who wish to drop their courses meet with their respective instructors prior to completing the withdrawal process. Any student withdrawing from a course should be aware of Senate Bill (SB) 1231. Course instructor will provide specific information regarding this Senate Bill.
ACADEMIC HONESTY STATEMENT “In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else's language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source” (Council of Writing Program Administrators, 2003) . Penalties may be applied at the discretion of individual instructors, including, but not limited to, failing the assignment, failing the course, suspension and/or expulsion.

CONFERENCES WITH INSTRUCTOR:
Instructors will make themselves available to students for individual conferences by appointment or during their scheduled office hours.
Religious Holy Days
A “religious holy day” means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Section 11.20 of the Tax Code. The student must notify the faculty member in writing within the first 12 days of the semester of the intent to be absent due to a religious holy day. Under Texas Education Code 51.911, a student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time as established by the faculty member.

THREE-PEAT TUITION COSTS:
The ACCD colleges, with the approval of the Texas State Legislature, effective Fall 2005, will charge students the non-Texas resident hourly tuition rate for any course in which the students is enrolling for the third time.
Additional Information:
Each instructor will provide specific requirements for his/her course, which will include grading policies, weighting of grades, make-up polices, tardiness policy, course agenda, and any special requirements.
