English 1301: Freshman Composition I

Departmental Syllabus

PREREQUISITE: Appropriate placement score or placement from for ENGL 0300 or ENGL 0301.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Emphasizes training in reading and writing skills. Course requires essays based on provocative and critical readings. A student must earn a passing grade in English 1301 before enrolling in English 1302.

GOALS OF THE COURSE: Freshman Composition I is designed to prepare students to think and write on the college level.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course,

Learning Outcome 1: Students will be able to read, discuss, and write about texts critically and thoughtfully.

Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 1 through class discussions, collaborative activities, quizzes, and/or journals.

 Learning Outcome 2: Students will apply strategies for generating ideas for drafting and revising essays, through the writing of multiple drafts of essays. The students will be able to apply the principles of writing as a process, which includes pre-writing and invention, writing, revising, proofreading, and editing.

Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 2 by writing a minimum of three essays for the course that show awareness of writing as a process including awareness of audience, purpose, style, format, and accepted conventions of standard edited English. The cumulative total for the three essays should be at least 2000 words of polished prose. Students will also need to achieve a grade of C or better on each essay.

 Learning Outcome 3: Students will compose in various rhetorical situations, including but not limited to definition, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and/or evaluation/critical analysis. The student will be able to achieve competency in applying appropriate modes of organization, including paragraph development, introductions, and conclusions, in the development of expository essays. The student will also demonstrate awareness of audience and purpose in the construction of essays.

Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 3 by writing a minimum of three essays for the course that show awareness of writing as a process including awareness of audience, purpose, style, format, and accepted conventions of standard edited English. The cumulative total for the three essays should be at least 2000 words. Students will also need to achieve a grade of C or better on each essay.

Learning Outcome 4: Students will c ritique their own and the writing of others.

Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 4 by actively engaging in class discussions, collaborative activities, and essays. Students may participate in guided peer editing sessions to evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of the student's argument.

Learning Outcome 5: Students will a pply strategies for editing and proofreading, including the use of appropriate conventions of format, structure, and the means of documentation to their work

 Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 5 by demonstrating competency as part of the minimum three essays for the course described in Learning Outcome 2 as well as at least one in-class exam and/or writing project of at least 500 words with at least a minimum grade of a C.

* All graded essays will employ the “Grading Rubric for English 1301.”

 ATTENDANCE

Regular and punctual class attendance is required. A student who is absent for any reason will be allowed to do make-up work at the discretion of the instructor. However, a student will be held responsible for all class work and materials. A student who has accumulated absences equivalent to two (2) weeks of instruction may be dropped after the census date. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W” (Withdrew). Since tardiness is a form of absenteeism, the instructor may establish a policy regarding tardiness.

 DROPS AND WITHDRAWALS

 The Communications Department requires that students who wish to drop their courses meet with their respective instructors prior to completing the withdrawal process. Any student withdrawing from a course should be aware of Senate Bill (SB) 1231. Course instructor will provide specific information regarding this Senate Bill.

ACADEMIC HONESTY STATEMENT

“In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone

else's language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source” (Council of Writing Program Administrators, 2003) . Penalties may be applied at the discretion of individual instructors, including, but not limited to, failing the assignment, failing the course, suspension and/or expulsion.

 ADA STATEMENT:

CONFERENCES WITH INSTRUCTOR:

Instructors will make themselves available to students for individual conferences by appointment or during their scheduled office hours.

Religious Holy Days

A “religious holy day” means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Section 11.20 of the Tax Code. The student must notify the faculty member in writing within the first 12 days of the semester of the intent to be absent due to a religious holy day. Under Texas Education Code 51.911, a student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time as established by the faculty member.

Academic Support Services provides walk-in tutoring and tutoring by appointment. Academic Support Services is currently located on the first floor of the Northeast Campus building at 8300 Pat Booker Road, Live Oak, TX, 78233.

THREE-PEAT TUITION COSTS
The ACCD colleges, with the approval of the Texas State Legislature, effective Fall 2005, will charge students the non-Texas resident hourly tuition rate for any course in which the students is enrolling for the third time.

Each instructor will provide specific requirements for his/her course, which will include grading policies, weighting of grades, make-up polices, tardiness policy, course agenda, and any special requirements.
