English 1302: Freshman Composition II
Departmental Syllabus
PREREQUISITE: Students must have earned a passing grade in English 1301. English 1301 and English 1302 cannot be taken concurrently.
COURSE DESCRIPTION : Building upon the learning outcomes of English 1301, this writing intensive course requires students to critically read, analyze, and evaluate literary works representing a variety of genres in effective compositions. Students will be required to research literary works, issues inspired by the literature, and other relevant topics. They will document their research correctly and accurately.
GOALS OF THE COURSE: Freshman Composition II is designed to prepare students to think and write on the college level and introduce students to literature.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course,
Learning Outcome1: Students will be able to r ead, discuss, and write about texts critically and thoughtfully.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 1 through class discussions, collaborative activities, quizzes, and/or journals.
Learning Outcome 2: Students will be able to distinguish among various literary genres.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 2 by reading several different works in various genres (poetry, short stories, and dramas) and be able to explain the characteristics, terminology applicable to each, and compare and contrast these characteristics on tests and/or in writing.
Learning Outcome 3: Students will be able to recognize the importance of specifying audience and purpose and will be able to apply the principles of writing as a process, which includes pre-writing and invention, writing, revision, editing, and proofreading.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 3 by writing a minimum of two essays that analyze literature with a C or better.
Learning Outcome 4: Students will use primary and secondary sources in a formal research assignment.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 4 by writing a formal research assignment using primary and secondary sources with a C or better.
Learning Outcome 5: Students will be able to achieve competency in edited English to include the conventions of grammar, spelling, coherence, appearance, patterns of development, introductions, and conclusions.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 5 when completing the two essays required in Learning Outcome 2 and the research assignment in Learning Outcome 4.
*All graded essays/research assignments will employ the “Grading Rubric for English 1302.”
ATTENDANCE
Regular and punctual class attendance is required. A student who is absent for any reason will be allowed to do make-up work at the discretion of the instructor. However, a student will be held responsible for all class work and materials. A student who has accumulated absences equivalent to two (2) weeks of instruction may be dropped after the census date. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W” (Withdrew). Since tardiness is a form of absenteeism, the instructor may establish a policy regarding tardiness.
DROPS AND WITHDRAWALS
The Communications Department requires that students who wish to drop their courses meet with their respective instructors prior to completing the withdrawal process. Any student withdrawing from a course should be aware of Senate Bill (SB) 1231. Course instructor will provide specific information regarding this Senate Bill.
ACADEMIC HONESTY STATEMENT
“In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone
else's language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source” (Council of Writing Program Administrators, 2003) . Penalties may be applied at the discretion of individual instructors, including, but not limited to, failing the assignment, failing the course, suspension and/or expulsion.

CONFERENCES WITH INSTRUCTOR:
Instructors will make themselves available to students for individual conferences by appointment or during their scheduled office hours.
Religious Holy Days
A “religious holy day” means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Section 11.20 of the Tax Code. The student must notify the faculty member in writing within the first 12 days of the semester of the intent to be absent due to a religious holy day. Under Texas Education Code 51.911, a student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time as established by the faculty member.

THREE-PEAT TUITION COSTS
The ACCD colleges, with the approval of the Texas State Legislature, effective Fall 2005, will charge students the non-Texas resident hourly tuition rate for any course in which the students is enrolling for the third time.
Additional Information:
Each instructor will provide specific requirements for his/her course, which will include grading policies, weighting of grades, make-up polices, tardiness policy, course agenda, and any special requirements.
