Reading 0303: College Reading and Critical Thinking
Departmental Syllabus
PREREQUISITE: Placement score or "C" or better from READ 0302.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Skills emphasizing review, refinement, and reinforcement of basic reading skills such as vocabulary development, comprehension, fluency, critical readings, and study skills are stressed.
GOALS OF THE COURSE: College Reading and Critical Thinking is designed for students who need further development in reading and study skills in preparation for college work.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course,
Learning Outcome 1: Students will apply a variety of study skills, including but not limited to goal setting, organization, time management, note taking, annotating, and textbook reading strategies (SQ3R).
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 1 by applying the learning outcome with materials written on or above the 8 th level, as measured by the Accuplacer or by performance on course skill assessment tests, skill exercises, written papers or projects, and portfolios.
Learning Outcome 2: Students will determine the meaning of words using context clues, word parts, dictionaries, and textbook glossaries.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 2 by applying the learning outcome with materials written on or above the 8 th level, as measured by the Accuplacer or by performance on course vocabulary assessment tests, skill exercises, written papers or projects, and portfolios.
Learning Outcome 3: Students will apply core comprehension skills such as identification of topics, stated & implied main ideas, supporting details, transitions & thought patterns, and use of outlines & concept maps.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 3 by applying the learning outcome with materials written on or above the 8 th level, as measured by the Accuplacer or by performance on course skill assessment tests, skill exercises, written papers or projects, and portfolios.
Learning Outcome 4: Students will a pply critical reading skills such as interpreting graphic information, distinguishing between fact and opinion and making inferences.
Performance Objective and Measurement: Students will meet the requirements of Learning Outcome 4 by applying the learning outcome with materials written on or above the 8 th level, as measured by the Accuplacer or by performance on course skill assessment tests, skill exercises, written papers or projects, and portfolios.
ATTENDANCE
Regular and punctual class attendance is required. A student who is absent for any reason will be allowed to do make-up work at the discretion of the instructor. However, a student will be held responsible for all class work and materials. A student who has accumulated absences equivalent to two (2) weeks of instruction may be dropped after the census date. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W” (Withdrew). Since tardiness is a form of absenteeism, the instructor may establish a policy regarding tardiness.
DROPS AND WITHDRAWALS
The Communications Department requires that students who wish to drop their courses meet with their respective instructors prior to completing the withdrawal process. Any student withdrawing from a course should be aware of Senate Bill (SB) 1231. Course instructor will provide specific information regarding this Senate Bill.
ACADEMIC HONESTY STATEMENT
“In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else's language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source” (Council of Writing Program Administrators, 2003) . Penalties may be applied at the discretion of individual instructors, including, but not limited to, failing the assignment, failing the course, suspension and/or expulsion.

CONFERENCES WITH INSTRUCTOR:
Instructors will make themselves available to students for individual conferences by appointment or during their scheduled office hours.
Religious Holy Days
A “religious holy day” means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Section 11.20 of the Tax Code. The student must notify the faculty member in writing within the first 12 days of the semester of the intent to be absent due to a religious holy day. Under Texas Education Code 51.911, a student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time as established by the faculty member.

The ACCD colleges, with the approval of the Texas State Legislature, effective Fall 2005, will charge students the non-Texas resident hourly tuition rate for any course in which the students is enrolling for the third time.
