Faculty & Staff Guide to Library Resources
Resources
Use the catalog to find books and audiovisual materials owned by the NVC library and other Alamo Colleges libraries. The catalog is available 24/7 from the library home page.
Present a current faculty/staff ID or a picture ID. You may have up to 10 items checked out at a time. You can check out books for 30 days, CD's for 14 days, and videos and DVD's for 7 days.
As an employee of NVC you have 24/7 access to over 30,000 fulltext electronic books (E-books). E-books appear in the Alamo Colleges library catalog with the call number E-books. Another access point for E-books is from the Subject List of Databases. You will be prompted to enter your PALS login and password from off campus.
In addition to select print periodicals available in the library, the NVC library provides fulltext access to thousands of scholarly journals and popular magazines through our online databases. Access is available on and off campus.
Off-campus access to online databases and E-books is available 24/7. From the library home page, click Online Databases and then select a database from either the Alphabetical List or the Databases by Subject list. Click the name of the database you want to search, and a login screen appears. Use your PALS login name and password.
Services
NVC Interlibrary Loan Service is for all CURRENT students, faculty, staff and administrators who are in GOOD STANDING with the Alamo Colleges Library network. You may request up to 5 items using NVC Interlibrary loan service. Interlibrary forms are at the Reference desk and the circulation desk. Items borrowed from any of our sister colleges will ship in 2-3 days.
Items coming from other libraries will take 7-14 business days. Stop by the Circulation Desk or call 486-4500 to see if your materials have arrived.
The Alamo Colleges libraries belong to TexShare, a consortium of Texas academic and public libraries. This program facilitates free reciprocal borrowing privileges for patrons of Texas libraries. Most San Antonio academic libraries participate. You can obtain a TexShare card at the Reference Desk.
Laptops with Internet access and print capabilities are available for use in the library. A picture ID is required to check out a laptop. Laptops are available at Computer Desk in library.
Instructors/academic departments may place NVC materials, personal items, and textbooks on reserve for students to use in the library for two hours. For more information, see the library's policy on reserves. Please advise students to ask for reserve items at the Circulation Desk. They will be able to check out items with a valid student I.D. or picture I.D.
Course-specific Library Instruction: We will also honor faculty requests for library classes tailored to particular disciplines and research assignments. However, students should attend the Information Literacy modules to obtain a general overview of the library and introduction to the research process.
Due to the high cost and volume of printing in the library, an honor system of paper reimbursement is in place. Photo copiers are located by the Reference desk and Computer help desk. Photo copiers take change (no pennies) and one- dollar bills. Copies are 10 cents a page. Please bring your own change.
In order to give NVC students the information literacy skills they need to be successful in college and beyond, the NVC Library is offering a series of classes which are FREE to students, offered at different times to accommodate student schedules and students attend library classes outside of class; faculty keep their class time to teach their discipline.
