Faculty & Staff Guide to Library
Resources
RESOURCES
Online
Library Catalog - Use the catalog to find books and audiovisual materials owned by the NVC
library and other libraries in the ACCD. The catalog is available 24/7 from
the library home page.
To check out
materials, present a current faculty/staff ID, or provide a picture ID and your
Social Security Number. You may have up to 10 items checked out at a time. You
can check out books for 30 days, CD's for 14 days, and videos and DVD's for 7
days.
Electronic Books - As an employee of NVC you have 24/7
access to over 30,000 fulltext electronic books from any
computer with Internet access. E-books appear in the ACCD
catalog with the designation [electronic resource]
after the title. Another access point from off campus
is the the Alphabetical List of Databases. Greenwood Press,
Oxford and Netlibrary are in the Alphabetical List of
Databases. You will be prompted to enter your PALS login
and password as for database access.
Online
Subscription Databases - In addition to select print
periodicals available in the library, the NVC library provides fulltext access
to thousands of scholarly journals and popular magazines through our online databases. Access is available off campus as well as on
campus.
Off-Campus Access - Off-campus access to online databases
is available 24/7. From the library home page, click Online Databases and then select a database from either the Alphabetical List or the Databases by
Subject list. Click the name of the database you want to search, and a login
screen appears. Use your PALS login name and password.
SERVICES
Interlibrary Loan (ACCD) - NVC faculty, staff and students may
borrow up to 5 items from other ACCD libraries. Search the online library
catalog to find them item you want, print the catalog page, and bring it to the
Reference Desk. Write your name, phone number, and SSN on the front of the
paper. We will request the item from the library that owns it. The item will be
delivered to NVC in2-4 days. Stop by the Circulation Desk or call 348-2060 to
see if your materials have arrived.
Interlibrary Loan (outside ACCD) - You may request up to 5 books from
libraries outside ACCd by filling out an Interlibrary Loan form at the
Circulation Desk. A librarian will access a nationwide database to determine
where the books can be found. The books will arrive in 10-14 days.
TexShare
- The ACCD
libraries belong to TexShare, a consortium of Texas academic and public
libraries. This program facilitates free reciprocal borrowing privileges for
patrons of Texas libraries. Most San Antonio academic libraries participate. You
can obtain a TexShare card at the Reference Desk.
Wireless
Laptops - Laptops with Internet access and print capabilities are available for use
in the library. A picture ID is required to check out a laptop.
Reserve
Items - Library
materials to be used by many students for course work may be placed on reserve
for a specified period of ime. Library materials, textbooks provided by the
instructor, and personal items may be placed on reserve. For more information,
see the library's policy on
reserves. Please advise students to ask for reserve items at the Circulation
Desk. They will be able to check out items for use in the library for two
hours.
Library
Instruction - In order to give NVC students the information literacy skills they need to be successful in college and beyond, the NVC Library is offering a series of classes in Fall 2008 which are FREE to students, offered at different times to accommodate student schedules and students attend library classes outside of class; faculty keep their class time to teach their discipline.
Course-specific Library Instruction: We will also honor faculty requests for library classes tailored to particular disciplines and research assignments. However, students should attend the Information Literacy modules to obtain a general overview of the library and introduction to the research process.
Printing
- Due to the
high cost and volume of printing in the library, an honor system of paper
reimbursement is in place. A receptacle for paper donations is on the
Circulation Desk. Two photo copiers providing copies at 10 cents a page are also
available in the central area of the library.
