Program Description
STUDIES IN BRAILLE TEXTBOOK TRANSCRIPTION

The Braille Textbook Transcriber program will provide students with the necessary general education coursework, applicable workforce skills and transcribing experience to successfully perform tasks required in the basic braille transcription. Graduates will be able to:
  • read and write

  • demonstrate proficiency in transcribing and proofreading

  • use basic tactile graphic production methods

  • possess knowledge of production technology

  • use successful small business practices
Upon graduation, students will not only have the skills they need to enter the workforce, but will also have a business plan, marketing materials, a business Web site, an electronic portfolio and more – all designed to help graduates immediately begin working as transcribers.

This unique and rewarding curriculum is conducted entirely online. Students are required to successfully complete three consecutive multidisciplinary semesters to receive the Braille Textbook Transcriber Certificate. In each semester, all coursework is integrated so that one assignment may satisfy requirements in multiple courses. This is a challenging program, requiring approximately 20-30 hours of work each week, but the online format offers some scheduling flexibility while meeting class-mandated deadlines.
