Nanotechnology refers to the ability to manipulate materials or devices at the nanometer scale (one billionth of a meter), the level of individual atoms and molecules.  This exciting new field allows us to build machines on the scale of human cells, and has the potential to change the way almost everything is designed and made. 

Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field, working at the crossroads of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and information technology.  Not only does it provide the potential for miniaturization, but it also creates entirely new material properties…which offer the possibility of creating materials and devices nobody has even imagined yet.
