Attitudes, Skills, Knowledge (ASK) Outcomes
The opening of NVC in 1998 coincided with statewide move to strengthen the core curricula of Texas colleges. Over the past several years, faculty teams at NVC have identified twelve student-learning outcomes that help faculty evaluate the progress of their individual disciplines as well as assess student learning. It is expected that students should manifest all twelve of the ASK outcomes upon completion of the core curriculum at NVC. ASK outcomes focus on both the intellect and emotional well being of each student. Each discipline has picked the ASK outcome(s) most relevant to their core course(s), and is working to develop measures to assess their progress in outcome attainment.
For over two years, the psychology faculty worked to determine the ASK outcomes most relevant to psychology curriculum. The four ASK outcomes selected for the psychology discipline are to
- value lifelong learning and wellness
- communicate effectively (visual, verbal, written and listening)
- cooperate and collaborate effectively, and
- understand various ways of knowing and how individual disciplines (in our case, the field of psychology) investigate and interpret the world.
The PASK is administered to all psychology classes near the end of each semester. The PASK is a 20-question survey utilizing a 5-point Likert scale ranging from “Completely Disagree” to “Completely Agree”. It’s based on the curricula and experiences common to psychology students and is intended to measure our success in achieving our four ASK outcomes. The PASK is available online.
NVC’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), “ASK NVC: Assessing Student Learning Across the Curriculum”, is our plan for long-term improvement of student learning. The QEP centers on three of the ASK outcomes: Communication (verbal and written), collaboration, and critical thinking. Four teams at NVC have developed assessment criteria for the interdisciplinary perspective: Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), Speaking Across the Curriculum (SAC), Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum (CTAC), and Collaborative Learning Across the Curriculum (CAC).
