Thank you for choosing Northwest Vista College (NVC)! In keeping with the mission of the college, "Creating Opportunities for Success", we are committed to providing a quality learning experience for our community. As such, we have many programs to serve the needs of the diverse community surrounding NVC!
Academy for Lifelong Learning
The Academy for Lifelong Learning provides opportunities for: intellectual development, cultural stimulation, personal growth, and social interaction for people 50 and over. Yearly membership is only $25. The membership fee entitles participants access to all courses sponsored by the Academy.
Children's Program
The Children's Enrichment Program provides learning opportunities and fun-filled activities to motivate and challenge your child to become a lifelong learner. Students will learn and grow, build on existing skills, and enrich their attitudes and knowledge.
Our goal is for each child to leave our program with a joy of learning. In order to maximize
the positive effects of a low teacher-student ratio, all courses have limited space available. Early registration is encouraged since classes often fill early.
Educator Preparation Program (Alternative Teacher Certification)
The Educator Preparation Program at NVC is structured to enable students to become certified in the state of Texas to be Bilingual Generalists EC-6, Special Education EC-12, Dual-Special Education/Bilingual Education and ESL EC-6 Teachers. The course is designed to provide students with a content-specific curriculum, Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) course, and a one year internship teaching in an accredited school within the area of certification. Successful program completion can be achieved within two years.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program provides quality learning and enrichment experiences to meet the lifelong needs of students. The ESL curriculum includes instruction in Grammar, Writing, and Listening/Speaking & Reading. A student may choose to take the ESL courses at either NVC or the Westside Education and Training Center for Academic, Continuing Education, or Job Advancement purposes. Upon completion of the ESL Program, students may pursue a degree by taking academic courses.
UTSA JUMP! (University of Texas at San Antonio Joint Undergraduate Matriculation Program)
NVC has partnered with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to provide access to college to students who did not meet UTSA's published admission criteria for incoming freshman but did receive deferred admission to UTSA. The Joint Undergraduate Matriculation Program (JUMP!) offers students the opportunity to begin college as a freshman at NVC, where they can complete either the UTSA or NVC core curriculum.
After successful completion of 42 core semester credit hours for UTSA or 46 semester credit hours for NVC core curriculum with a minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average and in good academic and social standing, the JUMP students are guaranteed admission to UTSA as transfer students.
Other benefits for students enrolled in the JUMP program include a dedicated NVC advisor for the program so students are certain they are taking transferable classes, a waived application fee to UTSA when students apply as a transfer student, and eligibility for a $2,000 scholarship to complete upper division course work once they arrive at UTSA, in addition to other financial aid they may be eligible for.

Participants in this program may also receive Trade Readjustment Allowances (TRA), paid on a weekly basis to individuals who exhaust their unemployment benefits while receiving training.
