Speaking Across The Curriculum
(SpAC)

  • SpAC was initiated in 2001 as a result of a recommendation made by the Institutional Response Accreditation Committee’s charge that Northwest Vista College “demonstrate that graduates are competent in oral communication.”
  • SpAC began by assessing students at NVC giving presentations in front of their classes and/or assessing students’ oral communication skills in group settings.
  •  SpAC continued to grow by providing Faculty Development training and resources for instructors to enhance and encourage the use of presentations in classrooms at NVC.  The resources include handouts that instructors can give students with information on basic presentation skills, organization, delivery, etc. as well as sample rubrics for instructors to help assess the presentations, speaking opportunities they are grading.
  • SpAC has become part of the Quality Enhancement Plan that encourages all disciplines at Northwest Vista College to encourage speaking opportunities within their classroom both formal and informal, individual and in groups, enhancing the oral communication competency skills in our graduates.
