What skills will I use on the job?
The Palo Alto College Veterinary Technology Program will develop your knowledge and skill in the following areas:
- nursing and restraint of companion animals,laboratory animals, and food animals
- clinical laboratory procedures in hematology, serology, microbiology, and parasitology
- animal anatomy - (large and small animal)
- use of the x-ray machine; film processing and radiation safety
- administration of pre-anesthetics, tranquilizers and general anesthetics
- formulating doses and administering pharmaceuticals to patients
- diseases of companion animals, food animals, equine, and laboratory animals
- client education in animal nutrition and preventive medicine
- filling prescriptions and use of microcomputers
How much can I earn?
A registered veterinary technician's salary is comparable to compensation in other fields requiring similar education and training. There is wide variation, however, because of location, type of practice, experience and responsibility.
Who will hire me?
Most veterinary technicians work in veterinary hospitals and clinics. You may also find job opportunities in a variety of other facilities, including:
- Laboratory and/or research facilities, such as the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio
- Zoos and wildlife parks
- Pet stores, animal control, and animal welfare shelters
- USDA Veterinary Services
- Private companies producing and marketing pharmaceuticals
- Animal production facilities
