Oscar Cardozo Ocampo was a gifted arranger and pianist. On July 21, 2001 he suffered a tragic car accident and died at the age of 58. While Cardozo Ocampo lived most of his life in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he never forgot his roots. He worked with many of Paraguay's finest vocal groups and helped them to produce unforgettable recordings. His musical arrangements have been recently performed in the United States by the New York Philharmonic. Just before his untimely death, Cardozo Ocampo recorded "Piano Paraguayo" a solo album of famous Paraguayan melodies. The CD will be released in September.
Cardozo Ocampo's death provoked profound public sentiment both in Argentina and Paraguay. The following pictures are from a festival held at the Centro Cultural Paraguayo-Japones on July 27, 2001 in Asuncion. A parade of distiguished artists, many of whom recorded with Oscar, played in a tribute to him. Cardozo Ocampo performed here frequently. Of particular interest is his Encuentros del Alma album series which was recorded at this venue. The theater will be renamed in his honor.
This is a sampling of the various performers present at the tribute:

There were many admirers of Cardozo Ocampo who attended the festival held in his honor. The event was held outdoors despite the cold weather because the theater could not accommodate the crowds.
