A PROCESS OF MAKING MUSIC

Your assignment is to go to the National Public Radio website and listen to an interview by Terry Gross, host of Fresh Air with Ray Manzarek, the key board player of the famed rock group The Doors. Like any other art form, music is created through a process, and this is what Manzarek illuminates for us. This is what you should pay close attention to when you listen to the interview. You will find his discussion of the group's smash hit Light My Fire particularly interesting..

  1. Discuss the contextual factors involved in the making of the Doors' music. (i.e. historical period, interpersonal relations among the band members, individual talents of members, etc) Remember contextual factors are situational.

  2. How were traditional musical elements and genres (typed) combined to create innovative music?

  3. What risks did the Doors take with their music?
