AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) now a part of ICQ; free; offers basic chat, voice chat, free PC-to-PC or PC-to-phone telephone calls
ICQ (acronym for "I seek you") pioneered the IM technology; biggest IM user base; purchased in 1998 by AOL; has ALL the features anyone else offers except video IMing; charges a fee for PC-to-phone calls
MSN Messenger part of a coalition with Yahoo! and Odigo; free; offers basic chat for up to 4 users in the same message window, voice chat, stock tracking, file sharing, pager and mobile phone messaging, online games, free U.S. PC-to-PC and PC-to-phone telephone calls
Yahoo! Messenger free; versions for all major operating systems and mobile phones and handheld Internet devices; offers basic chat, IM alerts for stocks and e-mail, free U.S. PC-to-PC and PC-to-phone telephone calls; has a kids' version (filtered) called Yahooligans! for Windows only
Yahooligans! free monitored chat for kids; Windows version is only one available
