Class Three for the Information Research Certificate

Internet Quiz

8. True or False? If you copy and paste information found on the Internet into your own documents, you should cite your source.

Answer

TRUE.

Neither morality nor the law are suspended when you go onto the Internet. Using other people's information or words (called intellectual property) without giving credit is called PLAGIARISM. It is illegal and immoral and in some cases can be harshly punished. A local example is Albert Flores, a popular weatherman on local TV who was fired because he used other people's material in his newspaper articles without giving credit.

If you want to learn more, read our website on PLAGIARISM. The best way to avoid plagiarism is to learn how to correctly cite your sources. Be sure to read through that lesson in this program. In addition, you might want to look at how other sites explain common citation methods. See Citing Sources.
