Mariana Ornelas' Trip to Spain, Summer 2004

Flamenco

When one thinks of Spain, flamenco, a dance form from Andalucía, immediately comes to mind. A tablao is the name of the place where it is performed. It is usually small and quite intimate. The venue I visited El Tablao de los Cuchilleros is close to the Plaza Mayor. The show started about 11 pm the customary time for anything to get going in Madrid. While the dancing was good, the performers did not dance to a live guitar accompanament. This to me was rather disappointing. However, the show was inexpensive, only 6 Euros, the equivalent of about $8. The dancers really kept the audience going, too.
