Annotated List of Search Engines
Here is a more complete alphabetical listing of search engines with short
definitions. The ones listed in the table above are my favorites, but you
should try out some of the ones below. You may find one that becomes your
favorite!
About.com - a subject directory. Recommended by the Berst Alert.
All-In-One Search Page - Includes various forms-based search tools.
AlltheWeb - (search IQ 100). "Using its spider its working to collect a billion urls.
This puppy is fast as a greyhound, but they forgot to train it for relevancy and to
avoid redundancy. Its like a dumb dog, it fetches everything whether you want it or not. If a site has 1,000 pages on the same topic, it returns them all."
AOL NetFind - a keyword index.
BetterBrain - Searches the top 12 search engines and presents results organized by engine in one long easy to read scrollable list (SearchIQ).
BigFoot - an Internet white pages directory that helps you find people on the Web. It also
offers a variety of services to members (it's free to join) including a free life-long
e-mail address.
BotSpot - "A bot is a software tool for digging through data. You give a bot directions and it brings back answers." This site catalogs "all" bots on the net.
BizWeb - A subject index to over 3,619 companies doing business on the Web
C4.com - "A new beta version of the comprehensive Cyber411 metasearch engine" (Seach IQ,
8/1/99). Rated best search tool by Search IQ, 8/1/99.
Deja News - the premiere search engine for finding information on Usenet Newsgroups
Dogpile - a metasearch engine
Easy Searcher - a metasearch engine, supposedly easy to use for the beginner
Edison - a list of more than 3000 specialized search sites
Excite - a keyword index (enclose phrases in quotes; Boolean operators must be in all caps
(AND); can use "concept-based" searching instead of Boolean logic by listing each word
which must be in a site (+fish +mexico). Rated best free features by Search IQ, 8/1/99.
excite TRAVEL - A comprehensive guide to communities around the world. Includes information and
sites on 2,090 cities and 780 other destinations
FastSearch - keyword index. A new approach with new software to try to keep up with the rapidly expanding size of the Internet.
FinanceWise - Until recently, investors looking for hot new stock offerings, economic trends,
and other financial news had to wade through mounts of irrelevant search engine results
to glean a few gems. Now, a new search engine, FinanceWise (www.financewise.com),
delivers fast, focused and up-to-date financial information free of charge...
FinanceWise is specifically designed to retrieve, analyze, index, and present only
finance-related information from the Internet. Instead of attempting to index millions
of irrelevant Web pages, like mainstream search engines, FinanceWise targets only the
sites with relevant content to the global financial community. It currently searches a
predefined set of premium sites, but in the near future, FinanceWise will crawl the
entire Web, looking for financial data wherever it hides.... Figure 1 shows the opening
page of FinanceWise. In order to get the most out of this search engine you’ll need to
take a few moments to complete a relatively hassle-free registration form. Once the
registration process is complete, be sure to bookmark your personal page as your entry
point into FinanceWise. At present, your personalized page looks pretty much like the
start page but it isn’t hard to imagine how this page could become an excellent tool
for delivering custom financial news and content based on a user’s preferences.
(from BotSpot).
FindSpot - "A directory of search engines and search engine tools." (Search IQ rates it at
120, 1/8/99).
Four11 - Internet white pages that include e-mail, business, telephone,
and celebrity directories. You can use Four11 to track down long lost relatives and old friends,
or make sure you're listed in its directory, so they can find you.
Galaxy - a subject directory
Google - keyword index which gives huge results. Sorts based on the number of sites which
link to the site in question. "Its robot collects pages whether they've been submitted
or not making it a very comprehensive engine. Technically its not a metasearch engine
but it functions as one... Ranks sites by number of incoming links and the popularity
of referring sites. Findings are highly relevant, particularly for searches with two
or more words. Includes redundant listings." (Search IQ rates it at 130, 8/1/99),
Google's US.Government - "Google has one of the most active spiders resulting in one of the
largest databases" (Search IQ, 1/8/99).
GoTo.com - a keyword index rated by SeekHelp.com as one of the top ten search engines on the
Web (also called WWW Worm)

Lycos - a keyword index... includes a wide variety of 'information services' including the
search engine, Internet Yellow pages, a people finder, news services, and other tools
and treats that make it easy to find information online.

Mamma - a metasearch engine (calls itself the "mother of all search engines")
MetaCrawler - a meta search tool that accesses nine major search engines and allows you to
refine your queries
NetCenter - a subject directory recommended by the Berst Alert.
NetSearcher: The Search Engine for Internet Professionals
- this is a search index, not a
subject directory... sparse syntactical tools available at present (phrase searching and
indirect or implied Boolean AND/NOT)
Northern Light - a keyword index... accesses some business sources not on the Web
OneSeek.com - a metasearch engine... you can see results side by side
Open Text - a keyword index rated by SeekHelp.com as one of the top ten search engines on the
Web.
-
PAC's Web INDEX - an alphabetical listing of subject headings and links. The links included
here have been hand-picked to suit the needs of community college students and faculty.
Pinakes - "In ancient times, the Library of Alexandria was seen as a universal store of human
knowledge. As the Library grew in size, however, it became increasingly difficult to
locate relevant material. The poet Callimachus solved the problem by compiling a
catalogue called The Pinakes. On a far smaller scale, this Web page hopes to provide a
similar function for Internet resources, by linking to the major subject gateways"

recently replaced by Excite!, this Web directory is best for general searches and for
its reviews of Web sites.
WhoWhere - an Internet white pages-style directory helps you find people's e-mail addresses,
as well as snail mail addresses, phone numbers, and other information... the only search
engine which also provides the person's email provider
Word Search - "by Proteus Search Dictionaries, Thesauri & Encyclopedias" (Search IQ).
- World Wide Web Worm -
see GoTo.com above for link.
Yahoo - a subject directory... probably the most widely used search tool on the Internet.
Humans (rather than automated spiders) categorize Web sites and arrange them in Yahoo!'s
hierarchical index, allowing you to drill down through categories towards the topic you
seek. As an added benefit, Yahoo! offers search results from the AltaVista! search
engine which guarantees an exhaustive search. Rated best Web directory by Search IQ,
8/1/99.
Yureka - takes the metasearch approach, riding piggyback on a half
dozen or so other services and consolidating results. This site [Yureka] hopefully
designates itself a "find engine", and removing duplicate entries from the final list:
it also offers a plain English, sentence template for queries.
