SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT

FALL 2005

The service learning project involves working a minimum of 15 at the office of Aquifer Guardians in Urban Areas (AGUA) and the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance (GEAA), two groups working to preserve the Edwards Aquifer. Although the environment unit will not be covered until October, you may begin to serve now. Both the executive director of GEAA and Director of Development of AGUA will deliver a presentation in class on August 26 to acquaint you with their organizations and the type of specific projects you will accomplish for them.  You will write a 4-page paper about your experience and connect it to the course. You will also be required to give a brief, informal oral presentation during our final exam period.

You must provide verification of your hours with your paper. Use the attached time log to document your hours, and make sure your supervisor signs it (see pg 3) A letter from your supervisor stating the number of hours you served will also suffice as long as it is written the agency’s letterhead. You may choose the service learning option in place of writing a 5 page reflective paper about this course. Both options are worth 30% your final grade.

Requirements for the paper are as follows:

1.      It must be a minimum of four pages typed and double-spaced. Use font 12 and one-

inch margins.

2.      Provide background information about the organizations. This section should be

be no more than one paragraph.

3.      Provide an assessment of your experience. How did you benefit from it? What did

you learn? What contributions do you believe you made to the agency? Would you recommend this option to fellow students? Why/why not?

4.      Connect your experience with the humanities. For example, how does protecting  our aquifer relate to the humanities? How did this experience bring you closer to the Humanities and the city in which you live?

5.      Make sure your paper is free from spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors.

6.      Include a works cited section in MLA format for all sources you have used.

7.      The due date for this project is during final exam week on December 7 during our final exam period from 12:30-2:30 in Ozuna 119. No late papers will be accepted!  There is no final exam.

8.      You will also be required to present your project during the above period  on

I will not grade this presentation, but if you fail to make it, I will deduct 10 points from your project grade. This presentation will be in the format of a group reflective session where all participants in this project speak informally.

9.      You may use visuals in your paper such as illustrations, maps, photographs, etc. to

give your paper a more creative look.
