The Philosophical Rationale for the LRC Approach

The Ozuna Learning Resources Center is an integral part of Palo Alto College; it is an academic library. As such, a basic underlying rationale for our services and resources is the goal of teaching information literacy. As a consequence, some of our services are different from services offered by public and specialized libraries.

The prime example is how reference librarians respond to questions. In a public library, a question usually causes the librarian to look up the answer and give it to the patron. However, at Palo Alto College we are interested in the student learning how to find information for himself or herself. Therefore, instead of looking up the answer for the student, the reference librarian walks the student through the process of how the answer might be found.
