The legal profession has recognized that many tasks in serving a client's needs can be performed by a trained paraprofessional working under the direct supervision of a lawyer. Among these tasks are:
Preparing trial briefs, motions and writs, and assistance during a trial
Preparing legal instruments, such as wills, petitions and applications
Conducting fact-finding inquiries and preparation of written memoranda
Conducting basic legal research
Applying computer technology in the legal environment
San Antonio College offers this training, leading to an Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies. Students can attend classes full-time or part-time according to their needs and can select classes offered either during the day or at night.
The Paralegal Studies Program curriculum is a two-year program if pursued full-time. Two options are available in the Paralegal Studies program: Paralegal Studies and Paralegal Studies: Nonlawyer Advocacy.
The Paralegal Studies Program curriculum is designed to provide paraprofessional education to qualify a person as an assistant or aide to lawyers. The need for assistance in the legal profession has expanded greatly as our population increases and with growing demands for legal services in both civil and criminal matters. The qualified paralegal works at all times under the direct supervision of a lawyer.
