I. CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Introduction to Computerized Accounting utilizes the computer in maintaining accounting reports, making management decisions, and processing common business applications with primary emphasis on a general ledger package.

ACNT 1303 with a grade of "C" or better or equivalent.

V.  COURSE CONTENT
Introduction to QuickBooks Pro, Vendors, Customers, Period-End Procedures, Inventory, New Company Setup - Part I, New Company Setup - Part II, New Company Setup - An Alternative, Payroll Setup and Processing, Banking, Jobs and Time Tracking, Customizing Your Company File.
VI. LEARNING OUTCOMES AND PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

Learning Outcome #1: Students will analyze, record, summarize, and report accounting transactions encountered in typical service and merchandising businesses using QuickBooks Pro 2005.

Performance Objectives: Students will:

  1. Describe the differences and similarities between manual and computerized accounting.
  2. Identify the four levels of operation within QuickBooks Pro.
  3. Open QuickBooks Pro, open a company file, make a backup copy of a company file, and restore a backup copy of a company file.
  4. Identify the system default accounts for vendors and update the vendor list.
  5. Record purchases on account and process credit memos in the Enter Bills window.
  6. Record payments of accounts payable in the Pay Bills window and record cash purchases in the Write Checks window.
  7. Display and print vendor-related reports.
  8. Identify system default accounts for customers and update the Customer:Job List.
  9. Record sales on account in the Create Invoices window and record collections of accounts receivable in the Receive Payments window.
  10. Record cash sales in the Enter Sales Receipts window and record deposits in the Make Deposits window.
  11. Display and print customer-related reports.
  12. Update the Chart of Accounts list.
  13. Record adjustments in the Make General Journal Entry window.
  14. View the effect of period-end adjustments on the trial balance and display and print period-end reports.
  15. Change the reports display using the Modify Report button and display and print financial statements.
  16. Identify the two inventory systems and use the Items list.
  17. Record purchases of inventory items in the Enter Bills and Write Checks windows.
  18. Identify transactions requiring sales tax and record payment of sales tax in the Pay Sales Tax window.
  19. Process sales discounts.
  20. Record adjustment to inventory items in the Adjust Quantity/Value on Hand window.
  21. Display and print inventory-related reports.

Method of Measurement: Students will demonstrate the achievement of the learning outcome and performance objectives by completing a chapter demonstration problem, Key Concepts questions, end-of-chapter case problems, and examinations within a minimum of 70 percent accuracy.

Learning Outcome #2: Students will convert a manual accounting system to a computerized accounting system using QuickBooks Pro 2005.

Performance Objectives: Students will:

  1. Create a new company file and set up the new company file using the EasyStep Interview window.
  2. Display and print reports after using the EasyStep Interview window.
  3. Review information recorded in the EasyStep Interview window and make any necessary corrections.
  4. Customize the Chart of Accounts and Item lists.
  5. Update the Chart of Accounts, Customers:Job, and Vendor lists.
  6. Adjust the new company file to follow the accrual basis of accounting.
  7. Display and print accounting, financial, and lists reports.
  8. Identify system default accounts created by QuickBooks Pro.
  9. Create a new company file without using EasyStep Interview.
  10. Establish preferences and set up payment terms.
  11. Update the Chart of Accounts, Customer:Job, and Vendor lists.
  12. Customize system default accounts in the Chart of Accounts list.
  13. Enter opening balances and reverse accounts QuickBooks Pro creates that are not used in the accrual basis of accounting.
  14. Display and print accounting, financial, and list reports.

Method of Measurement: Students will demonstrate the achievement of the learning outcome and performance objectives by completing a chapter demonstration problem, Key Concepts questions, end-of-chapter case problems, and examinations within a minimum of 70 percent accuracy.

Learning Outcome #3: STudents will establish and process payroll, record banking entries, and establish jobs and time tracking using QuickBooks Pro 2005.

Performance Objectives: Students will:

  1. Review payroll terminology and transactions.
  2. Set up payroll and update the Chart of Accounts list for payroll.
  3. Update the Payroll Item list and update the Employee list.
  4. Record payroll in the Pay Employees window.
  5. Record payments of payroll taxes in the Payroll Liabilities window.
  6. Display and print payroll-related reports.
  7. Transfer funds between accounts using the Transfer Funds Between Accounts window.
  8. Reconcile cash accounts using the Reconcile window.
  9. Enter credit card charges using the Enter Credit Card Charges window.
  10. Pay credit cared charges using the Write Checks window.
  11. Display and print banking-related reports.
  12. Add a job to the Customer:Job list.
  13. Record and allocate payroll incurred for a specific job in the Pay Employees window.
  14. Record and allocate services rendered for a specific job in the Create Invoices window.
  15. Set up Time Tracking and track employee time for each job using the Weekly Timesheet window.
  16. Pay employees and create invoices using Time Tracking data.
  17. Display and print job and time tracking reports.

Method of Measurement: Students will demonstrate the achievement of the learning outcome and performance objectives by completing a chapter demonstration problem, Key Concepts questions, end-of-chapter case problems, and examinations within a minimum of 70 percent accuracy.

Learning Outcome #4: Students will customize the company file using QuickBooks Pro 2005.

Performance Objectives: Students will:

  1. Customize the appearance of reports using the Modify Report button and Collapse/Expand buttons.
  2. Memorize a customized report.
  3. Export a report into Microsoft Excel.
  4. Change report default settings.
  5. View and print a graph.
  6. Change subaccount default settings.
  7. Customize an activity window display.
  8. Customize and print an invoice.
  9. Prepare and view a QuickBooks letter in Microsoft Word.
  10. Memorize a transaction.
  11. View fiscal year closing.

Method of Measurement: Students will demonstrate the achievement of the learning outcome and performance objectives by completing a chapter demonstration problem, Key Concepts questions, end-of-chapter case problems, and examinations within a minimum of 70 percent accuracy.

VII.  COURSE GRADE

A. College Requirements:

A written, comprehensive final examination, not to exceed two and one-half hours in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly scheduled time. Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the appropriate dean. Other examinations are given at the discretion of the instructor.

A student who must be absent from a final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination. A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded “F.” Postponed examinations result in a grade of “I.” The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end of the semester or the grade automatically becomes an “F.” (San Antonio College Bulletin, Faculty Handbook - January 1995)

B. Departmental Requirements:

  1. This is a computer-intensive course. A minimum of 65% of the student's grade is based upon assignments, tests, and the final examination completed on the computer.
  2. Grading standards:

  3. Basis for assignment of grade:

  1. Assignments constitute 40% of the final grade. Assignments consist of Key Concepts questions, the chapter demonstration problem, Case Problem 1 and Case Problem 2 for each chapter. All assignments are completed using a computer and are due as assigned. Late work will be penalized 15 points per class day.
  2. A minimum of three tests constitute 45% of the final grade. Each test consists of objective questions (maximum of 50 percent per test) and hands-on problems covering the commands and features practiced in the textbook problems that demonstrate the achievement of the listed competencies. The textbook, notes, or other help cannot be used during the test. Late tests will be penalized 15 points per class day.
  3. The final examination is comprehensive and represents 15% of the final grade in the course. The final exam consists of objective questions (maximum of 50 percent) and hands-on problems covering the commands and features practiced in the textbook problems that demonstrate the achievement of the listed competencies (minimum of 50 percent). The textbook, notes, or other help cannot be used during the test.

VIII. Policies and Procedures

A. College Policies

    6. Students are required to silence all electronic devices (e.g., pagers, cellular phones, etc.) when in classrooms, laboratories and the library. College Academic Council, 01/ 2000.
    7. San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories, day and/or evening, is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed. Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes the policy with regard to each.
      Absences of each student are recorded without exception. The counting of absences begins on the first day of class. A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction in a 16-week semester may be dropped by the instructor. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W' (withdraw). It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the withdrawals have been submitted.
