I. Catalog Description: Database Applications provides basic concepts related to currently used database software. Practical applications stress organizing and querying the database to meet users information needs.

II. Pre-requisites, co-requisites and other requirements:

  • Ability to type by touch recommended
  • Consistent access to, or ownership of, Microsoft Access 2007
  • Computer with internet access

V. Course Content: POFT 1274 provides an introduction to Microsoft Office Access 2007. Topics include creating a database, querying a database, maintaining a database, presenting data in reports and forms, and incorporating date, memo, and OLE fields.

Understand Access terminology, the Access window, and the basic characteristics of databases by creating a database, creating a table, defining fields, opening a table, adding records to an empty table, closing a table, and printing the contents of a table, use Access help system, close a database and quit Access.

Method of Measurement : Successfully complete homework assignments and course exams with a minimum of 70% accuracy.

  • Learn how to ask questions in a database by using queries. Students should be able to create and run a query, enter criteria into a query, sort data in a query, join tables, use calculations in a query, and design crosstab queries.

  • Students will be able to update records, filter records, change the structure of a database table, change the appearance of a datasheet, add validation rules to a table, enforce referential integrity in a database, order records, create and use indexes.

  • Understand and accomplish report creation, sort and group within a report, use multiple tables in a report, understand report design considerations, create and use custom forms, add combo boxes and titles to a form and understand form design considerations.

  • Enhance forms with OLE fields, hyperlinks, and subforms. Learn about and use special fields, updating new fields, use advanced form techniques such as subforms, labels, and titles. Use date and memo fields in a query.

  • Learn to create and open switchboards, modify a switchboard page, create a pivot tables, change properties in a pivot table, use a pivot table, create a pivot charts, change the chart type, change the pivotchart organization assign axis titles, remove drop areas, add a chart title, save a pivot chart. Students will create and run a macros, add actions to a micro, copy a macro.

VII. Course requirements and grade computation.

A. College Requirements:

A written, comprehensive final examination, not to exceed two and one-half hours in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly scheduled time. Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the appropriate dean. Other examinations are given at the discretion of the instructor.

A student who must be absent from a final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination. A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded “F.” Postponed examinations result in a grade of “I.” The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end of the semester or the grade automatically becomes an “F.” (San Antonio College Bulletin, Faculty Handbook - January 1995)

B. Departmental Requirement:

Two comprehensive written tests consisting of T/F, Multiple Choice, and Fill-in-the-Blank will be given.

Comprehensive written test consisting of T/F, Multiple Choice, and Fill-in-the-Blank will be given.

C. Instructor Requirements: Consistent attendance by staying on schedule-according to the applicable due date schedule is required. Students who do not turn in assignments for two consecutive weeks will be dropped from the course for lack of attendance. If a student is dropped from the class for excessive absences, a grade of WN will be recorded. Late work will be accepted but will be penalized 20 points.

VIII. College Policies:

in an academic penalty or disciplinary penalty for academic dishonesty. Academic Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism and collusion. For additional information refer to the “Student Code of Conduct” in the San Antonio College Bulletin.

F. Students are required to silence all electronic devices (e.g., pagers, cellular phones, etc.) when in classrooms, laboratories and the library. College Academic Council, 01/ 2000.

G. San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories, day and/or evening, is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed. Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes the policy with regard to each.

Absences of each student are recorded without exception. The counting of absences begins on the first day of class. A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction in a 16-week semester may be dropped by the instructor. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W’ (withdraw). It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the withdrawals have been submitted.
