I. CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Word Processing introduces students to business applications using word processing software. Practical applications are the focal point.

II. REQUIRED BACKGROUND

Microsoft Word 2007 Complete Concepts and Techniques presents the core application concepts required in any introductory application software course. No previous experience with a computer is assumed, and no mathematics beyond the high school freshman level is required.

Two comprehensive (open book) objective tests will be given. They will consist of T/F questions.

Test 1 will cover Projects 1, 2, and 3.

Test 2 will cover Projects 4,5, and 6.

Final Examination 25%

Includes a comprehensive objective test consisting of T/F and Multiple Choice.

VI. COURSE CONTENT

POFT 1272 Microsoft Word 2007 Complete Concepts and Techniques is a course in which students are expected to learn basic skills in using the microcomputer keyboard; loading software systems and performing tasks. This course was specifically developed for an introductory personal computer applications course. It covers all essential aspects of Word 2007. Students completing this course will have a knowledge of Word 2007 and will be able to solve a variety of word processing problems.

VII. COMPETENCIES

At the completion of POFT 1272, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand Word terminology and Word Window by starting and quitting Word; entering text, adding bullets to paragraphs while typing; checking spelling while typing; saving a document; selecting characters, lines, and paragraphs; centering, bolding, italicizing, and changing the font and font size of selected text; importing a picture and resizing the picture; printing a document; opening a document; correcting errors; and using Word Help.

  2. Understand the basic components of a business letter, use Letter Wizard and Resume Wizard; personalize the resume using Word’s AutoFormat feature and print preview. Create a cover letter using a Word letter template; personalizing the cover letter; creating and inserting an AutoText entry; dragging and dropping selected text; aligning text vertically with the TAB key; and checking spelling.

  3. Create a research paper with a table using the MLA style of documentation to create the research paper. Practice on changing margins, adjusting line spacing, using a header to number pages; first-line indenting paragraphs; using Word’s AutoCorrect features; creating a Word table, entering data into the table, and formatting the table; adding a footnote; inserting a manual page break; creating a hanging indent; creating a text hyperlink; sorting paragraphs; using the thesaurus; and counting the words in a document.

  4. Work with tables in a document; add outside borders with color; add color to characters; use Clip Art. Change a floating picture to an inline picture; insert section breaks, insert an existing document into an open document; save a document with a new file name; set and use tabs; create tables using the Draw Table feature, change the alignment of table cell text; change the direction of text in table cells; center a table; customize bullets in a list; and change the starting page number in a section.

  5. Generate form letters, mailing labels, and envelopes from a main document and a data source. Create and edit the three main documents and their associated data source; insert the system date into a document; insert merge fields into the main document; Use the IF field; display and print field codes; merge and print documents; select data records to merge and print; sort data records to merge and print; view merged data in the main document; insert bar codes on the mailing labels and envelopes.

  6. Use Word’s desktop publishing features to create a newsletter; add ruling lines; add bullet symbols; format documents into multiple columns; create dropped capital letters; frame and position graphics across columns; insert column breaks; add vertical rules between columns; create a pull-quote; add color to character and lines; highlight text, use the Format Painter button; create and run a macro to automate a task; change the color of a graphic; add text to a graphic.

Attendance Policy

Monitored weekly via email. Students accumulating excessive absences (2) may be withdrawn from the course without further notification. Your weekly e-mails should keep pace with the schedule of Lab work described on the Assignments Due page, and is to include the labs you have completed in the current Projects. If you do not complete a project at the assigned time, you must still e-mail me on the day the Project is due for attendance purposes, otherwise you will be marked absent.

You will also include Projects as attachments to the email sent weekly.
