I. Catalog Description: Study of human relations in the workplace including issues affecting workers in office environments. Topics include attitude formation, interpersonal skills, leadership, teamwork, written and oral communications, time management, conflict resolution, professional development, and the impact of ethical decision making upon human relations in the business world

III. Text: Human Relations, Third Edition; Marie Dalton, Dawn G. Hoyle, and Marie W. Watts, Southwest Publishing, 2006.

  V. Course Content: Course content includes an introduction to and understanding of human relations, perception, communication, group dynamics, organizational structure, motivation, goal setting and job performance, change dynamics, leadership, power, problem solving, decision making and creativity, team building, business etiquette, job-seeking skills, wellness, and future orientation.

VI. Learning Outcomes and Performance Objectives with their methods of measurement as used to determine the students' mastery of those outcomes.

  Learning Outcome:

A. Demonstrate an understanding of human relations as it relates to the workplace; human relations in organizations, perception differences and effect of perception on employer-employee relations; communication types and levels including barriers and effect of communications on relationships between employer-employee relations.

Evaluation: These points will be measured through objective and essays tests on each of the points stated above and students will achieve 70 per cent accuracy on objective and essay tests.

B. Demonstrate an understanding of motivation and its effects on human relations; work and contributions of major theorists; planning and establishing well-formulated goals and priorities for effective job performance; dynamics of change and its effect; concept of leadership, including its theories, skills methods of development, and importance in people's lives; concept of power, including its importance, sources, positioning, and importance in politics, symbols, and pitfalls.

Evaluation: These points will be measured through objective and essays tests on each of the points stated above and students will achieve 70 per cent accuracy on objective and essay tests as well as oral and written reports.

C. Will be able to list steps in problem-solving, explain the relationship between problems, list steps in solving them, explain the relationship between problems and decision making, use a variety of approaches to decision making , and discuss the role of creativity in problem solving; discuss the need for effective team concepts and its effectiveness on teams' productivity, identification of steps in building effective teams, and how to be an effective team member; recognize ethical practice and use good judgment in business etiquette; develop professionally; time management; and other human relations-related topics.

. VII. Course requirements and grade computation.

A. College Requirements:

A written, comprehensive final examination, not to exceed two and one-half hours in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly scheduled time. Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the appropriate dean. Other examinations are given at the discretion of the instructor.

A student who must be absent from a final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination. A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded “F.” Postponed examinations result in a grade of “I.” The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end of the semester or the grade automatically becomes an “F.” (San Antonio College Bulletin, Faculty Handbook - January 1995)

VIII. College Policies:

F. Students are required to silence all electronic devices (e.g., pagers, cellular phones, etc.) when in classrooms, laboratories and the library. College Academic Council, 01/ 2000.

G. San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories, day and/or evening, is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed. Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes the policy with regard to each.

Absences of each student are recorded without exception. The counting of absences begins on the first day of class. A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction in a 16-week semester may be dropped by the instructor. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W' (withdraw). It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the withdrawals have been submitted.
