Immunmization Requirements A List Of Immunizations Required For Entry Into The Dental Assisting Program

High school graduates should submit an official high school transcript with the graduation date to the Office of Admissions and Records at San Antonio College, 1300 San Pedro Ave., San Antonio, Texas 78212. Neither the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) are required for admission to the college, however, students taking these tests should send scores to the San Antonio College Assessment and Research Center, Room 110 of the Fletcher Administration Center.

Persons 18 years of age or older who are not high school graduates are encouraged to discuss admission with one of the counselors by calling (210) 733-2300 or by visiting the Counseling Center in the Moody Learning  Center on the San Antonio College campus. This office also can respond to questions regarding testing and course placement.

Persons transferring to the college from other accredited institutions should provide the Admissions and Records Office with an official transcript from the institution previously attended.

THE DENTAL ASSISTING PROGRAM IS A FALL-ENTRY PROGRAM WITH LIMITED ENROLLMENT.

In addition to meeting the general admission requirements of San Antonio College, students desiring admissions to the dental assisting program must submit all of the following by August 1 for Fall admission:

  1. A completed Dental Assisting Program application to the program office.

  2. Written proof of an advisement appointment with a member of the Dental Assisting Program faculty.

  3. An application for formal admission to San Antonio College - (See San Antonio College Bulletin for details.)

  4. A counseling card from Counseling Services - meeting with a college counselor will provide the paperwork necessary to take the Accuplacer test.

  5. Proof of meeting the programs entry-level competencies which are Math 0300, English 0301 and Reading 0303. This can be done by scoring appropriately on the Accuplacer test, taking and passing the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA), or taking and passing the courses.

  6. Advanced Standing: Students may request advanced standing for introductory dental assisting courses only. These courses include DNTA 1301, DNTA 1305, DNTA 1311, DNTA 1353, and DNTA 1415. Students must take the final exam and complete the competencies for the course which is being challenged. The student must make 75% or better. A maximum of sixteen credits can be awarded.

Students accepted into the Dental Assisting Program will receive a letter of acceptance from the DA program office by mail no later than July 30and must attend the Dental Assisting Orientation seminar prior to enrollment in classes.  Scrubs, name tags, and ADAA student membership fees are paid for at this seminar.

New dental assisting students must submit the following by the first class meeting:

  1. A complete updated immunization record, including the Hepatitis B series; PPD/TB; TD; MMR; IPV(Polo); Varicella (Chicken Pox); DPT; a current thorough dental examination with interproximal radiographs and a dental prophylaxis (cleaning).
  2. Proof of fulfillment of all program purchase requirements (textbooks, diskettes, white shoes, etc.)

Applications that include all the requested information will be considered complete. Only complete applications are reviewed.  All students who apply for admission after the stated deadline are automatically considered for the next semester.  Application and forms needed for admission to the Dental Assisting Program are available in the Nail Technical Center-NTC Room 102.

Students must earn a minimum grade of "C" in all courses required in the Dental Assisting  associate degree or certificate program curricula.

Students are responsible for registration fees required for the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) registration and Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Examination. The TSBDE certificates are awarded upon successful completion of both DNTA 1305 and DNTA 1249.  The nitrous oxide examination must be passed before registering for DNTA 2260 - Summer Clinical - Dental Assistant.  Students must show evidence of having completed the American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider CPR course as an admission requirement and as an ongoing requirement.

Admission into the Dental Assisting Program does not guarantee successful completion of the program or a passing score on the Dental Assisting National Board Examination.

Please note: Should a student withdraw, fail, or drop, for whatever reason, he/she is readmitted on a space available basis.

Credit is awarded for High School Tech Prep program courses: DNTA 1311.
