Darlene is a Texas School for the Deaf alumni, graduating in 1980.  She participated in various organizations while in high school including; President of Student Body Government, President of Junior/Senior Class, Pep Squad Drummer, and student journalist for The Lone Star.

Darlene went to Gallaudet University where she completed her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology (1984).  While there, she was a sister of Delta Epsilon Sorority and worked on the program book for the Student Body Government.  She wrote several articles for Buff and Blue (Gallaudet's student newspaper). She obtained her M.A. degree in Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1987.After graduation she moved back to Austin, and eventually to San Antonio.  Darlene worked for five years as counselor/program manager at Southwest Center for the Hearing Impaired.  Before coming to San Antonio College, she worked at Texas Rehabilitation Commission as Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor.

Darlene is a full-time associate professor teaching many courses including:  ASL I - ASL VI, Visual-Gestural Communications, and Deaf Studies.
