Academic Advising

The Department of American Sign Language and Interpreter Training work closely with students to ensure they have access to college and department information that will allow them to navigate successfully through their journey to graduation at San Antonio College.

For students enrolling in the Program, the first step is to declare their major. Students may do this at Admissions and Records (Fletcher Administration Center Room 216). The major code for Interpreting students is 1508 and for DSS students is 1527. Once a student has declared their major, they will follow the degree plan of that year. Make sure you obtain a current college bulletin and keep it for future reference.

Interpreting and Deaf Support Specialist students are assigned an advisor when they enter the program.

Students are required to meet with their advisor each semester before enrolling in the following semester classes. There is a department hold on student registration that may only be removed by a faculty advisor or the Department Chair. Faculty advisors will post appointment sign up schedules prior to registration but students may make an appointment with their advisor anytime throughout the academic year. It is important to meet with the faculty advisor early in order to ensure availability in desired classes.

Students enrolling in department classes who are transfer students, or have prior signing experience are encouraged to meet with the Department Chair prior to registration. The Department Chair is the person who will be able to made decisions regarding the acceptance of signing/interpreting experience or placement after completion of the in house challenge exam.
