The Advisory Board has played an important part in the history of the Department. In 1992 a group of community leaders and stake holders met for the first time to establish an American Sign Language and Interpreter Training Advisory Board. Under the direction of the Dean of Occupational Technical Education Homer (Butch) Hayes, Theater and Communications Chair, David Mrizek, and ASL faculty member Melody Hull, the newly appointed Advisory Board worked diligently to conduct a program needs assessment, develop a viable degree plan, and to complete the mountain of paperwork involved in getting a new program approved in the state of Texas.

The Advisory Board today is still an important part of the program. Members of the interpreting community, stake holders, employers, educational entities and program graduates and current students make up the Advisory Board and meet once or twice a year.

Advisory board meetings allow the department to receive feedback and suggestions from the committee as well as to share with the board the recent accomplishments as well as department challenges. The program at San Antonio College would not be where it is today without our great Advisory board.
