American Sign Language Interpreting Internship

The capstone course for the Interpreting option is a two hundred and forty (240) hour interpreting practicum and service learning opportunity. This course should be taken the last semester of the student’s degree plan. San Antonio College Interpreting Training Program has agreements with many local agencies. During Interpreting I, II and III the student will have an opportunity to discuss with faculty what kind of interpreting setting they would like to have. The final placement decision rests with the program faculty and the accepting agency. Most interpreting opportunities happen during daytime working hours (Monday through Friday 8-5) yet we strive to locate opportunities at night and on weekends. Students must complete the 240 hours in the semester they are registered to take the class. If you are an evening student, chances are that you will need to make other working arrangements the semester you are enrolled in the Internship class.

We try to provide our students with a number of varied opportunities. Student interns are required to work under the supervision of a certified interpreter mentor. San Antonio College and other agencies have given interns the opportunity in recent semesters to interpret in educational settings such as the college classroom, social settings such as student organization meetings and events, platform settings such as presentations for Hispanic Heritage and Black History Month, entertainment settings such as plays and concerts, religious settings such as with the Catholic and Methodist Student Centers and the list continues. In addition to the 240 hours of internship, the class will meet on a weekly basis to discuss progress, ethical dilemmas and current trends in the profession. The class will also require that each student develop a professional portfolio highlighting their strengths, abilities, education and experience.
