Department Tips

DEPARTMENT TIPS

  • Try to complete the core classes (English, Math, Speech, Drama, Government or Psychology and Computer Literacy) before you begin the interpreting skill classes (Interpreting I, II, III). The second year of the program you will need to spend as many hours as possible in the Sign Language Lab and Resource Center.
  • All department courses are offered in both day and evening sessions. Not every course is offered each semester (See course calendar for specific information).
  • Following college guidelines, American Sign Language classes have a maximum enrollment of 18 and a minimum enrollment of 15. Interpreting skill classes have a maximum enrollment of 8 and a minimum enrollment of 7. If student enrollment does not satisfy the minimum number of students, the class will be canceled for that semester.
  • Take your ASL classes consecutively – do not skip a semester. If you do it will delay the completion of the program by a semester.
  • Students who take American Sign Language to satisfy a foreign language requirement need to register for ASL classes under (SGNL).
  • Interpreting majors who plan to transfer to a four-year institution following their interpreting degree and who wish to satisfy the foreign language requirement, also need to register for ASL classes under (SGNL).
