Lauri Metcalf - Department Chairperson

"Deaf people and hearing people are equal."

auri grew up in Denver, Colorado, the oldest child of Deaf parents.  She is a graduate of Colorado State University and attended graduate school at the University of Northern Colorado majoring in Deaf Education.  Lauri is certified at both the State and National Level.

In 1973 Lauri, established the first multi-handicapped deaf program in Denver, Colorado and went on to develop, a bilingual/bi-cultural preschool program serving both deaf children and hearing children of deaf parents.  In 1983, Lauri and family moved to Seattle, Washington where she was the Coordinator of a Parent Infant Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.  In 1985, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she worked as an interpreter at Los Alamos National Labs as well as a private practice interpreter.  In 1990 the Metcalfs moved to Dallas where she continued to work as a private practice interpreter and then taught at the Plano Regional Day School Program.  In 1993 they moved to Atlanta where she taught at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf.

Lauri has taught at the University of Denver, Metropolitan State University, Texas Woman's University and DeKalb College before coming to San Antonio College where she is the Chairperson of the Department of American Sign Language and Interpreter Training.  She served as Chairperson for the Texas Board of Evaluation for Interpreters for eight years. She is currently involved with the new test development for the certification of interpreters in Texas. The test is being created by a panel of experts in conjunction with the Univerisity of Arizona.
