SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE
Credit by Examination

San Antonio College recognizes that students, independent of the college environment, may have attained college-level proficiency in specific course areas. Students are, therefore, provided an opportunity to obtain college credit in these courses by examination.

I. GENERAL REGULATIONS

  1. The maximum credit allowed through any combination of exams is 32 semester hours. Credit allowances may vary with specific departments and individual exams.
  2. A Grade of CR is awarded. Minimum score requirements are listed in Section VII.
  3. Credit (CR) hours earned by examination will not be included in student’s GPA computation; however, the semester hours are counted for graduation.
  4. Credit by examination is awarded and posted on a student’s transcript only after the student has earned six college-level semester hours at San Antonio College.
  5. Only credit by examination grades of C or higher or CR designations are recorded on a student’s transcript.
  6. Credit by examination may not be earned for any course a student has already completed in the classroom.
  7. A student enrolled in a course for which credit by examination is sought must: 1. Withdraw from the course by the census date.
  8. A student who enrolled but did not complete a course in a previous semester/session is eligible for credit by exam in the non-completed course, provided at least six months have elapsed since the specific semester ended.
  9. A student who receives credit by exam may choose to not have it posted on his/her transcript and instead take its respective class for credit.
  10. Credit by exam awarded by San Antonio College applies to its program of study; such credit may transfer to other institutions according to the policies of the receiving institution. A student who plans to transfer should consult the transfer institution regarding its policies and acceptance of evaluated credit.

II. TESTS AT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE

San Antonio College Assessment Center will accept scores on the following exams. Specific credit granted is listed in Section VII. Students should contact departments directly for departmental credit information.

San Antonio College continues to provide individuals with an opportunity to obtain college credit in the subject matter(s) that are listed above, via the CLEP Examination. The CLEP is a computerized exam, which allows you to receive your test scores immediately. The College Board designs it. With the notable exception of CLEP Essay exams, you will receive your CLEP scores upon completion of the exam. An individual who completes the CLEP exam has the option of either submitting, or not submitting their CLEP scores for posting on their college transcript. The individual may then have the option of enrolling in the respective class for credit. Lastly, San Antonio College does not award a letter grade, only course credit is offered for any CLEP exam.

All CLEP credits awarded by San Antonio College are transferable to other institutions, subject to any restrictions per the individual policies of the receiving institution. It is highly recommended that all individuals who plan to transfer to another institution should consult with the receiving transfer institution regarding its policies and acceptance of CLEP credit. The CLEP testing program is primarily for San Antonio College students. Individuals from other institutions must obtain permission to test at our testing center, subject to seating availability .

IV. PROCEDURES FOR OBTAINING CREDIT

I. CLEP

  1. Register at Assessment Center, FAC 112.
  2. Take the exam.
  3. An unofficial score report will be issued immediately upon completion of exam except for English Composition with Essay.

II. Tests San Antonio College accepts for credit but did not administer.

  1. Submit official College Board score report form to the Assessment Center.
  2. Assessment Center will submit advanced standing recommendations to Admissions & Records.
  3. Advanced standing credit will be posted on the student’s transcript by Admissions & Records after the semester.

V. POLICIES FOR CREDIT BY EXAM RETESTING

I. CLEP Subject Exams - A waiting period of six months.

II. Other exams - Contact testing publisher or other institutional test centers for specific guidelines.

Contact the Assessment Center for specific CLEP Exam test dates and times.

CLEP Registration

REGISTRATION: Open registration consists of paying a $15 test administration fee that is non-refundable. You will then be schedule for a testing session. The $65 balance will be paid on the day of the exam. Credit Cards are the preferred form of payment. However, if you do not have a credit card, money orders will be accepted, money orders should be made payable to CLEP with the students name, address and social security number . Sorry, but no personal checks can be accepted.

REQUIREMENTS: Please bring two #2 pencils . PHOTO I.D. REQUIRED FOR TESTING. Allow 2 hours per CLEP exam. The total fee for each CLEP exam is $80.00, which will cover costs for testing and recording ($65.00 payable to CLEP & $15.00 payable to SAC). You must also have 6 hours of completed college level SAC credit to qualify for CLEP credit.

NOTES: You CANNOT register for the CLEP exam if:

a.) you are currently enrolled in the same course you wish to receive CLEP credit.

b.)You have received credit for that course.
