 I. CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Principles of Bank Operations is an overview of the fundamental banking functions, the role of regulation in the banking industry, and an explanation of financial products and services.
 

II. REQUIRED BACKGROUND

(Experience, prerequisites, corequisites necessary to enroll in the course.)  None.

III. TEXT

 Principles of Banking, 9th Edition, copyright 2007, American Bankers Association, Layout by Wendi Calver, Editing by Anne R. Grant and Barbara B Minich.  

IV.  YOUR GRADE WILL BE DETERMINED AS FOLLOWS

  40% Mid-Term Exam  
  20%  Class Participation, i.e. conference call, weekly check-in  
  40% Final Exam 
 100%

 VI.   CLASS PARTICIPATION 
Class participation consists of a weekly "check-in" with the instructor. This can be done anytime during the  week by sending the instructor an email in the Black Board Vista Email. The instructor must receive the e-mail or other communication prior to 9:00 PM Monday evenings.  You will not receive a reply to weekly checkins.   Questions, comments and the issues regarding the student's progress in the course in addition to other issues if a reply is expected, my be addressed to bbeshea@alamo.edu the same address with the name of the course in the subject line.  In addition, the weekly telephone conference call is the preferred venue for discussion, interaction and questions as well as insight to the reading materials from the instructor.  This call will be done on Monday evenings at 9:15 PM.

Participation is strongly encouraged.  Questions from students and response to direct questions posed by the instructor and germane  remarks also constitute class participation.  Quality of remarks is more important than quantity.

Read  lecture notes and  chapter notes on course website.  Read text book chapters as assigned. 

For maximum benefit from the course the student should independently complete the "Self Check" in the text book and review the answers in the back of the book.

 Mid-Term Exam
Exam format will be multiple choice questions.  If the exam is missed due to illness or for other acceptable reasons, it is up to the student to contact the instructor to make the necessary arrangements. Failure to complete the makeup within 10 days will result in a 10 point reduction in the exam score.

 Final Exam:
Questions will be the same format as the above. 

IIX.     COURSE OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able (contingent upon specific modules completed) to explain the importance of full-service commercial banking as it affects the economy, the community, business, and the individual; describe the three major functions of commercial banks and their interrelationship; list the various products and services banks offer governments, businesses, individuals, and correspondents; contrast between demand and time deposits; illustrate the various types of bank loans and investments; explain the concepts of liquidity, safety, and income; and identify various banking regulations and regulatory agencies.
