Program OverviewThe primary goal of the College Access Project for High School Seniors (CAPHSS) is to increase college attendance among graduating high school seniors and facilitate their transition from high school to college. The process used to accomplish this goal is two-fold. One, educate students to the idea that higher education April 28, 2008 through the admissions process at San Antonio College and other Alamo Community Colleges. The College Access Project for High School Seniors helps students make the transition from high school to college as easy as possible. College counselors come to the high schools to provide the services listed below. San Antonio College also participates in the Connections program, an initiative between the Alamo Community Colleges and the school districts, which strives to improve the rate of college attendance by high school graduates. The process of this project occurs in SEVEN phases, all on the High School campus! 1. Presentations It is our goal to present to every senior at each high school we target. The material presented is motivational in scope and informational in content. No matter if the student is planning on going straight into a four-year university, starting at a community college, or is unsure about attending college at all, the presentation is designed to inform and motivate all students towards obtaining a college education 2. Applications We will help you meet your goal of having 100 percent of your seniors apply to college by coming to your school and helping groups of students complete the on-line application to one of the Alamo Community Colleges. 3. Counseling Each targeted high school has a designated CAPHSS Counselor. That counselor will be available to work with students, individually, on a regular basis on the student’s high school campus. The CAPHSS counselor is a resource to assist the high school in facilitating the student’s transition into higher education. 4. Parent Nights Many students will enthusiastically approach their parents about college after participating in the “Presentation” and/or “Counseling” phases. Often these students will encounter parents who do not understand the availability of higher education and resources and, therefore, do not believe higher education to be a viable option for their child. For this reason, the CAPHSS counselors strongly believe that educating parents is a critical part of obtaining higher education for many students. We have specifically designed presentations that will help parents become partners in helping the student reach their potential in higher education. We will be glad to help you design strategies in reaching these parents. 5. Orientation The Orientation phase is designed to inform the student of the available educational programs that the ACCD has to offer, and to help them begin the process of matriculation to San Antonio College, St. Philips College, Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College or Northeast Lakeview College. Representatives from ACCD colleges will be available to provide information, answer questions, and assist the student in filling out appropriate applications. The target group of the Orientation Phase is the student who is strongly considering an ACCD college for his/her higher education. This phase is normally done in an “Assembly” style setting and usually lasts about 1 hour. 6. Assessment The AssessmentsApril 28, 2008ments and placement needs. The internet-based ACCUPLACER will be the assessment used. The Accuplacer meets Texas state standards as an “Alternative THEA” test and also meets the course placement needs of all ACCD colleges. 7. Counseling/Registration The Counseling/Registration is the final phase in which counselors, advisors, and other key personnel from ACCD entities will come to the high school campus. At the registration event a counselor or advisor will meet, one-on-one, with the student and help them to designate which courses will be needed and actually designate a schedule for the upcoming summer and/or fall semesters. It is our goal to remove the barrier of what is often an overwhelming matriculation process. We aim to have the entire matriculation process completed by the time the student graduates from high school. For more information call CAPHSS at (210) 733-2145 or e-mail your CAPHSS Counselor.
