Steps to Becoming a Teacher

1. Meet the eligibility requirements
  • Minimum of a 4-year Bachelor's degree from an accredited university prior to seeking admission
  • GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Submit THEA or Accuplacer scores

2. Submit a completed application
Information Sessions provide details on admission requirements. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend and learn about program expectations.
  • Provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Provide 3 Professional Recommendation Forms included in application
  • Sign, date and submit your application

3. Screening of Qualifications and Admission Interview
Applications and transcripts are screened for eligibility before the admission interview. Generally, candidates should have a bachelor's or graduate degree in the subject area in which they would like to teach. If candidates do not hold a degree in the specific subject area, transcripts are reviewed for a minimum number of college level courses. The following table is used as a guide to determine whether an applicant has the preferred coursework for admission.

Science (8-12) 24 semester hours of Science courses
(12 of the 24 semester hours must be advanced coursework- junior/senior level or higher)
Mathematics (4-8) 12 semester hours of Math courses
Mathematics (8-12) 24 semester hours of Math courses
(12 of the 24 semester hours must be advanced coursework-junior/senior level or higher)
Science and Math (4-8) 16 semester hours of Science courses and
12 semester hours of Math courses
Generalist (EC-6) Grade of “B” or better in core content-English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, Fine Arts, Health, and PE
Bilingual Generalist (EC-6) Grade of "B" or better in core content-English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, Fine Arts, Health, and PE. Fluent in Spanish

4. Admission into the Program

Admission into the program will be decided after reviewing the completed application, coursework, test scores, professional recommendations, employment history, written essay, and admission interview. The applicant will receive a letter of acceptance, denial, or pending based on all admission and academic criteria. Meeting all academic and admission requirements does not necessarily guarantee entry into the program.


5. 1st year teacher in the classroom

Depending on your admission status, highly qualified applicants can begin teaching upon acceptance into our program. Other students become highly qualified by passing the TExES Content exam which can be taken while enrolled in our program. Upon becoming highly qualified, students seek employment in a local TEA accredited school. Our program provides letters of acceptance and employment eligibility. Students are strongly supported and guided throughout the year by Educator Support Specialists and classroom mentors.
