Power Writing

Course description

The writing class is designed to instruct students to compose creative writing that ranges from journaling to essays. Some exercises are focused on shorter compositions while others are edited and revised to produce complete essays.

Instruction also will address grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. These lessons will be incorporated within the written pieces to avoid concepts only taught in isolation.

A variety of strategies are used to develop students’ abilities. A visit to the campus newspaper is also utilized, scheduling permitting. This visit allows the students to see how the writing is produced for the articles, as well as learn of a possible career available through writing.

For Elementary Level the skills taught will come from the third, fourth, and fifth grade TEKS.

For Middle School Level the skills taught will come from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade TEKS.
