FINANCIAL AID
Tuition Assistance - Texas Public Education Grants - Tuition assistance is available to individuals who wish to enroll in career or occupation-related training courses. The Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) may be used for course tuition only. Financial assistance will be awarded for 75 to 100 percent of the official course tuition based on need. Only those courses with a minimum of 40 clock hours of instruction are eligible for tuition assistance. The standard "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA) must be submitted by all students wishing to apply for the TPEG. You can submit your FAFSA on line at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ doing so will shorten the time necessary to process your application.
After the financial aid office receives the Student Aid Report (SAR) you must then fill out an application for the TPEG grant after registering for the continuing education class. Forms are available at the financial aid office in the Fletcher Administration Building (FAC 101). Eligibility for the TPEG is determined upon a review of the FAFSA grant application. Students must complete applications six weeks prior to their registration. Late application will require students to pay tuition in advance and wait for partial reimbursement. Please state to the financial aid desk that your application is for a Continuing Education course.
Hazelwood Act Assistance - Texas Veterans! You may qualify for tuition assistance as a result of your military service if you entered the service from Texas and served honorably for at least 180 days. You must complete the standard Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), provide a copy of your DD 214, and a letter indicating you are not eligible for VA educational assistance. Contact the Financial Aid office in the Fletcher Administration Building (FAC101) for further information.

SENIOR CITIZEN PROGRAM
San Antonio College allows senior citizens to enroll in various continuing education courses, free of tuition and fees on a space available basis. Space available is determined as of 12 p.m. the day the class is scheduled to begin. Therefore, senior citizens wishing to attend a course in a tuition free status must contact the responsible Program Specialist to determine their eligibility and are not allowed to register for the class until after 12 p.m. noon on the first day of class.
“Senior citizen” means a person 65 years of age or older. Senior citizens have the option of full participation or auditing the class. Auditing exempts the student from taking any required testing and prohibits earning credit required to be issued a certificate of completion. Full participation mandates the student to take all required course work and testing to demonstrate mastery of the subject to earn a certificate of completion.

BACTERIAL MENINGITIS INFORMATION
Important Information about Bacterial Meningitis
This information is being provided to all new college students in the state of Texas. Bacterial Meningitis is a serious, potentially deadly disease that can progress extremely fast - so take utmost caution. It is an inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The bacteria that causes meningitis can also infect the blood. This disease strikes abut 3,000 Americans each year, including 100-125 on college campuses, leading to 5-15 deaths among college students every year. There is a treatment, but those who survive may develop severe health problems or disabilities.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
High Fever
Rash or purple patches on skin
Light sensitivity
Confusion and sleepiness
Lethargy
Severe headache
Vomiting
Stiff neck
Nausea
Seizures
There may be a rash of tiny, red-purple spots caused by bleeding under the skin. These can occur anywhere on the body.
The more symptoms, the higher the risk, so when these symptoms appear seek immediate medical attention.
HOW IS BACTERIAL MENINGITIS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis is made by a medical provider and is usually based on a combination of clinical symptoms and laboratory results from spinal fluid and blood tests.
Early diagnosis and treatment can greatly improve the likelihood of recovery.
HOW IS THE DISEASE TRANSMITTED?
The disease is transmitted when people exchange saliva (such as by kissing, or by sharing drinking containers, utensils, cigarettes, toothbrushes, etc.) or come in contact with respiratory or throat secretions.
HOW DO YOU INCREASE YOUR RISK OF GETTING BACTERIAL MENINGITIS?
Exposure to saliva by sharing cigarettes, water bottles, eating utensils, food, kissing, etc.
Living in close conditions (such as sharing a room/suite in a dorm or group home).
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE DISEASE?
Death (in 8 to 24 hours from perfectly well to dead)
Permanent brain damage
Kidney failure
Learning disability
Hearing loss, blindness
Limb damage (fingers, toes, arms, legs) that requires amputation
Gangrene
Coma
Convulsions
CAN THE DISEASE BE TREATED?
Antibiotic treatment, if received early, can save lives and chances of recovery are increased. However, permanent disability or death can still occur.
Vaccinations are available and should be considered for:
Those living in close quarters
College students 25 years old or younger
Vaccinations are effective against 4 of the 5 most common bacterial types that cause 70% of the disease in the U.S. (but does not protect against all types of meningitis).
Vaccinations take 7-10 days to become effective, with protection lasting 3-4 years.
The cost of vaccine varies, so check with your health care provider.
Vaccination is very safe - most common side effects are redness and minor pain at injection site for up to two days.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION?
Contact your own health care provider.
Contact your Student Health Center.
Contact your local or regional Texas Department of Health office.
