PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This program is designed train the student in correct usage of medical coding procedures in order to maximize health care reimbursement.  The student will learn procedures and guidelines in the proper use of ICD-9, CPT, and HCPC coding. The program also allows the student to gain the needed expertise in order to pass any coding certification exam the student wishes to take through AHIMA or AAPC.

TOPICS COVERED:
The program consists of a prerequisite course and four sequenced courses: Medical Terminology; Coding & Classification; Coding & Reimbursement Methods; Advanced Medical Coding; and Coding Scenario Application. The medical coding program will prepare the student with the skills to apply basic coding rules in the coding of diagnosis’s, procedures, and supplies.  Students will be able to identify specific classification systems in coding; in depth coverage of ICD9 and CPT coding procedures and guidelines; coding complex surgical/medical cases; government regulations as it relates to coding principles; appropriate principle/secondary applications to a medical code; development of professional coding competency areas and appropriate rules.

COMPUTER HARDWARE and SOFTWARE RECOMMENDATIONS:
No computer requirements are needed for this program.  All instruction is lecture, presentations, and hands on coding using the ICD-9, CPT, and HCPC code books.
