SCOBEE PLANETARIUM FRIDAY NIGHT PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Welcome!   Public shows at the Scobee Planetarium are presented each Friday, with the exception of college or national holidays.  Public shows are presented on Friday evenings when public parking is available on a very crowded college campus.  Our Public Show Schedule for Fridays through March 12th is as follows.  Please note, the Scobee Planetarium will be closed during the week of March 15th through the 21st for Spring Break.  A new public show series will be announced after Spring Break.

image of Little StarEach Friday at 6:30 pm through March 12th – “THE LITTLE STAR THAT COULD”

This is our new children’s show, a story about Little Star, an average yellow star in search for planets of his own to protect and warm.  Along the way he meets other stars, learns what makes each star special, and discovers that stars combine to form star clusters and galaxies.  Eventually, Little Star finds his planets and each planet is introduced to the audience along with basic information about our Solar System.  “Little Star” features exquisite digital animation and should prove a success with our youngest audiences.  Parents please note, children under age 4 are not admitted.

Embark upon a beautiful voyage through our universe, galaxy and solar system in search of liquid water - a key ingredient for life on Earth.  Our exploration starts on Earth, with its vast oceans that make life possible. One by one, we fly by the other planets and their moons, learning about their characteristics, such as atmosphere, temperature, and composition.  Is Earth the only water world in our Solar System?  Could water exist on other worlds?  Could those worlds harbor the miracle of life?  See why the search for water is key to answering such questions as we discover that our own planet, Earth, is truly an “Oasis in Space.”  This program is preceded by a brief examination of the current night sky.  Parents please note, children under age 6 are not admitted.

March 12th – “EXTREME  PLANETS”

Ever since the first humans looked towards the stars, we have wondered whether we are alone in the Universe. Today, we are one step closer to knowing the answer. We now know that planets are not unique to our own Solar System. Over 400 planets have been discovered orbiting stars beyond the Sun. In fact, these "extra-solar" planets appear to be quite common. While no one has yet found an Earth-like world with conditions similar to ours, it now seems only a matter of time before this discovery takes place. In this new program entitled, “Extreme Planets,” we'll explore what makes a planet "Earth-like" and take a tour of several worlds that just might fit the conditions astronomers are looking for. From water worlds to molten landscapes, inhabitable moons to planets with multiple suns, these exotic worlds aren't just science fiction anymore. Embark upon a celestial quest in search for worlds orbiting other stars as we explore, “Extreme Planets!”   Parents please note, children under age 6 are not admitted.

DISCOVER DIGISTAR 3!

Imagine a planetarium theater where all the sights and sounds are created digitally.  A theater where the dome is covered with breathtaking images and the audience is immersed in the images of outer space.  “Digital theater” has arrived in San Antonio and is now available at the Scobee Planetarium!
Because the Scobee Planetarium is located on the crowded campus of San Antonio College, our public shows are only presented on Friday evenings when parking is available.  Public shows are presented each Friday night with the exception of school or national holidays.  Please note and comply with our age restrictions. Yes, our Friday night shows are often very crowded and usually fill quickly to capacity.  Arrive early for the best seats!

  • Our seating capacity is approximately 80 to 85 people.  Shows often fill quickly, so please arrive early to be in line.

  • Once a program has begun, there is absolutely no late admittance.

  • Please remember our age restrictions. They are enforced at the door.

BRINGING A GROUP?

"Friday Night" public shows are open to the general public on a "first come - first seated" basis.  Our seating capacity is 80 to 85 people per show. While groups are welcome, if we are crowded and this is usually the case, it often proves very difficult to bring a large group (over 15) to our one of our Friday night performances.  Instead, contact our planetarium secretary about booking a daytime school tour.

However, if you are considering bringing a group to one of our Friday night public shows (school class, scouts, astronomy class, etc.) - please note that reservations are not taken on Friday nights. It is strongly recommended that all members of your group be assembled at the entrance of the planetarium prior to the start of ticket sales.  Sorry, one person may not buy tickets or "hold places" in line for group members yet to arrive.  Also, please note that tickets are sold to people in order of arrival. It is rude to have late arriving members of a group "cut in line" or "cut in front of" other people in order to join members of their group or party. Thanks for your co-operation.

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING!

Because our facility is used for college, school, and public programs, the planetarium is not available to host birthday or private parties. The Planetarium is open Monday through Friday.
