“National Astronomy Day” – Saturday, May 10th.

The Scobee Planetarium, in conjunction with the San Antonio Astronomical Association, will host a public "star party" on Saturday, May 10th, 2008 to celebrate National Astronomy Day.   The college observatory and a variety of telescopes provided by the members of the astronomy club will be pointed skyward to view the wonders of the May heavens.  Telescopic targets for the evening include the craters and mountains of the First Quarter Moon, the planets Saturn and Mars, and a variety of bright stars and nebulae.  Weather permitting, our stargazing begins at 8:00pm and continues until 10:00pm. All the celestial action takes place in the parking lot adjacent to the Scobee Planetarium on the campus of San Antonio College.  The event is presented “free” of charge and is open to all ages.

National Astronomy Day is designed to share the joy of astronomy with the general population.  Thousands of people who have never looked through a telescope will have an opportunity to see first hand what has so many amateur and professional astronomers excited. Across the globe, astronomy clubs, science museums, observatories, universities, planetariums, laboratories, libraries, and nature centers host special events and activities to acquaint their local population with the astronomical resources and facilities that are available.  It is an astronomical event that helps highlight ways the general public can get involved with astronomy.

In San Antonio, National Astronomy Day will be celebrated on Saturday, May 10th starting at 8:00pm and ending at 10:00pm.  Please note our “star party” requires clear skies!  The event is cancelled if the skies are cloudy or it is raining.
