Green Training Inititive
Get a head start in the job market with “green” job skills that prepare you to take advantage of the Green Jobs Initiative. These are the initial course offerings under the initiative:
All-Electric Vehicle Conversion (16 class hours)
Learn what it takes to convert a conventional internal combustion vehicle into one that is all-electric (battery powered). In addition to following the process step by step, you will become familiar with a vehicle that has already been converted.
Green Building Basics (7.5 class hours)
Give yourself an edge in the construction field by taking this course that covers green building practices, applications, and technology for new and existing buildings. This course is designed for professionals in the construction industry or others who want to get a better understanding of green building and its implications for our region.
Certified Energy Rater (64 class hours)
Official residential energy audits must be performed by certified Home Energy Rating System (HERS) auditors. The course is based on materials provided by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) and prepares people to take their certification exam.
Solar Photovoltaic Installer (48 class hours)
The demand for certified solar installers is on the rise, and this course aligned with the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners certification program, will prepare you for certification. The classroom component is complemented by direct contact with photovoltaic equipment.
40-Hour OSHA Hazardous Materials and 8-Hour Hazmat Refresher
This is the foundation course for safety and environmental protection specialists, and participants who successfully complete it will receive an OSHA recognized completion certificate. Every year, persons who have completed the 40-hour OSHA course are required to take an 8–hour refresher course in order to keep their certification active (see details on Page 39).
Interiorscaping and "Green" Interior Design (18 class hours)
Originally, this course was taught at San Antonio College with a focus on interior decoration, but it is being revamped to incorporate "green" topics such as indoor air quality, daylighting, and reduction of solar heat gain.
Certified Arborist (24 class hours)
Obtain your internationally respected Certified Arborist credential. We conduct this classroom and hands-on course for people interested in taking the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification test. The course is presented in collaboration with the San Antonio Arborists Association and the San Antonio Botanical Gardens using the ISA exam study guide.
Basic Herbalism (24 class hours)
Explore the realm of naturopathic herbalism in which you will learn the basics of medicinal qualities of herbs. This course combines background information provided by a respected local herbalist complemented by hands-on practice working with herbs.

Project Management
This course teaches various methods and techniques associated with a project undertaking that has a beginning and an end and is carried out to meet established goals within cost, schedule, and quality. Students will learn how project management brings together and optimizes the resources necessary to successfully complete the project. These resources include the skills, talent, and cooperative effort of a team of people; facilities, tools and equipment; and money.
Forensic Nursing
This class offers an introduction to forensic nursing, specifically the role and function of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). The class objectives will include description of the forensic exam, evidence collection, trauma, testifying and victim follow-up.
Monitor Technician
INTRODUCTION TO CARDIAC RHYTHMS: This course introduces the student to cardiac rhythms. Instruction on basic medical terminology pertaining to the heart, anatomy and physiology of the cardiac muscle, and normal sinus rhythm is given. Students will be introduced to arrhythmia monitoring equipment used in the hospital setting. This is the first course in the Monitor Technician Program and is open to all individuals who are interested in learning to read cardiac monitors. Successful completion of the course is defined as a grade of at least 80 percent on the final examination.
INTERMEDIATE ARRHYTHMIA RECOGNITION: This course is designed for individuals at the intermediate level of arrhythmia recognition. Emphasis will be placed on detection of common arrhythmias and the appropriate nursing interventions. Activities include lecture, discussion, analysis of EKG strips, demonstration of defibrillation, and evaluation of learning. PREREQUISITE: Introduction to Cardiac Rhythms. 12 Type 1 Contact Hours.
ADVANCED ARRHYTHMIA RECOGNITION: This course prepares the individual in advanced arrhythmia and heart block recognition. Emphasis will be placed on continuous cardiac monitoring and the appropriate nursing interventions. Learning activities will include lecture, discussions, analysis of EKG strips, performance of a 12-lead EKG, and evaluation of learning. PREREQUISITE: Intermediate Arrhythmia Recognition. This course offers 12 Type I Contact Hours.
Reiki of San Antonio
Asian Therapeutic Modalities of Healing Arts enable individuals, nurses and or caregivers to quiet their minds as part of identifying subtle natural energies. This activity enhances the Nurses and Caregivers ability to act and interact as well as reduce their own personal stress factor. In Nursing, the knowledge can be communicated to patients and individuals to give a sense of personal responsibility in helping toward the healing within themselves. These techniques give the caregivers an awareness and understanding of another culture’s approach in healing.
Certified Nursing Assistant
Play an important role in the care of clients in hospitals and long-term care facilities. It is the nursing assistant who provides basic care at the bedside while ensuring the safety and comfort of clients. The nursing assistant should be caring and sensitive to the needs of the clients and their families. Good communication skills help the nursing assistant facilitate effective interaction with clients, families, and other healthcare personnel.
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program offered by San Antonio College’s Department of Nursing Education, Continuing Education is approved by the Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services.
