Associate in Arts Degree

Requirements for the Degree of Associate in Arts

  1. Satisfaction of minimum entrance requirements.
  2. Demonstration of college level reading proficiency on a standardized examination. (See Exit Competencies in the catalog.)
  3. Completion of a minimum of 60-63 semester hours of credit, including at least 25 percent of the hours earned at San Antonio College. These shall include courses chosen from the list shown below.
  4. Maintenance of a minimum grade of C in each course applied to the core curriculum requirements and, where applicable, to each course required in the major field of study.
  5. Maintenance of a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C) for all college-level courses taken at San Antonio College and for all courses applied toward a degree, whether taken at San Antonio College or attempted at another college.
  6. Courses with course number beginning with the number zero are developmental level courses and as such do not fulfill any requirements for any degrees offered at San Antonio College. Additionally, the courses may not be transferable to a four-year university.
  7. Demonstration of computer competency. See Exit Competencies in the catalog.

or any 1400 series modern language course or equivalent; American Sign Language: SGNL 1301, 1302, 2301, or 2302 Students who plan to transfer foreign language courses to four-year institutions may need to substitute 1411 and 1412 for 1300, 1310, 1311, and 1312. These four-hour courses are prerequisites for the 2311 level courses, except in Latin. Students should check with the language department of San Antonio College or the transfer institution. Students taking speech courses for American Sign Language credit should check with the American Sign Language/Interpreter Training Department of San Antonio College for transfer information.

Mathematics
Math 1314 or any Math 3 (except 1350 and 1351) for which 1314or 1332 is a prerequisite

Natural Sciences
(4 hours must be in a laboratory science) 7

Some four-year universities may require 8 semester hours in natural science. For information on 2 + 2 transfer requirements, students should check with the appropriate natural sciences department or Counseling Department at San Antonio College or the four-year university to which they plan to transfer.

Physical Education/Kinesiology
Any two one-hour activity courses are 2 required for a degree awarded other than by distance (Internet, telecourse). For a degree awarded entirely by distance, KINE 1238 satisfies the requirement for Physical Education. Additionally, KINE 1238 may be substituted for a single one-hour activity course for a non-distance degree. (NOTE: Exceptions for students with more than two years of military service and those physician certified as physically unable to participate.)
