Steps to Transferring

Step one – Start Early and Plan Ahead

Even though you may plan to spend your first two years here at San Antonio College you should begin investigating universities as soon as you enroll at San Antonio College. Counselors are available to help you to define your short term and long term goals. They can advise you regarding course placement or course sequencing. Counselors are available to answer questions and direct you to other resources on campus as needed.

Step two – Choose an Institution

bullet Talk with a counselor from the Counseling Center regarding your plans and options

bullet Obtain degree plans and course equivalency guides for the major and universities that you are considering

bullet Utilize the catalogs, computers and transfer related materials located in the Transfer Center.

bullet Your first factors to consider should be:

1. Availability of Majors
2. Location of the University
3. Size of the University
4. Is the University Public or Private?
5. Costs - to include tuitions, financial aid and possible scholarship information
6. Admissions Requirements - G.P.A. and due dates for admission application
7. Availability of Student Housing

Step three – Research Your Options

The more that you know about your school choices the sooner you can decide if that institution is a good fit for you. Additional factors you should consider are:

bullet  Admission requirements – G.P.A. requirements
bullet  Policies regarding repeated courses & G.P.A. calculation
bullet  Does a grade of "D" transfer?
bullet  Minimum and maximum transfer credits accepted
bullet  Talk to a university representative
bullet  After visiting the campus, can you picture yourself there as a student?
bullet  All related tuition and living costs
bullet  Individual class size

Step four – Get Organized

The transfer process involves many deadlines. It is very important to know when these deadlines are so that your transfer can go as smoothly as possible. The deadlines you will need to find out about include but are not limited to:

 bullet Application Deadline
 bullet Financial Aid Deadline
 bullet Scholarship Requirements and Deadlines
 bullet Housing Application Deadlines

Always make and keep a copy of everything you submit to an institution. It is also a good idea to note the date and person you speak to and the information that you discussed. This will help you to stay better organized.

Step five - Develop Your Plan

If you have done your homework as we have suggested, you are keeping good records, and you are aware of your deadlines, then you are well on your way to a successful transfer.

Choose your courses carefully. If your first transfer university choice is highly selective you may want to have a secondary transfer plan. Remember it is never too early to start planning your future.
