The Earth Sciences Program at San
Antonio College provides quality instruction in the academic
disciplines of geography and geology, and it provides technical
training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Geography can be best described as the study of the spatial
patterns of physical and human features on the Earth’s surface (for
example hazards, languages, agriculture, resources), and the processes
that cause these patterns.
Geology is the science that focuses on the history of the Earth
as recorded in rocks, and it seeks to describe and understand this
history by analysis of geological features.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) utilize computers,
software, and specialized techniques that facilitate the analysis and
management of spatial data. This rapidly-changing technology
has its roots within the discipline of geography, but its use has
expanded across a broad range of disciplines, including environmental
science, engineering, health science, and business.

The majority of geography and geology courses that are taught in this
department are readily transferable to other colleges, and to four-year
universities in Texas and elsewhere in the United States.
The faculty prides itself on instructing students with relevant and
interesting course material, while striving to maintain high academic
standards. The goal is to provide students with valuable
information and skills so that they may be successful in non-academic
as well as academic environments.
